I can recommend you to read book "Art of SEO" by Eric Enge. And i agree with dragansk, just google seo tutorials and you'll find lots of useful info.

 

for seo there is not thumb rule to follow,

only - the proven methods to TRY...

currently GOOGLE occupied most of the space in search WORLD, so we need to know how google is giving the SEARCH RANKING to websites.

instead of following a particular person/ebook/tutorials, i strongly recommend to follow the blogs / forums / and members who are working for/with google like Matt Cutts / Rand Fishkin /Danny Sullivan etc...

from what I read making a good seo is all about speculation, what works today may not work tomorrow

 

Its best if you find a mentor that deals with SEO. There is a lot with SEO..

I agree with @na9endra, Google is one of the accurate dominating Search engine, Check google updates regarding to SEO regularly and try to follow them. Reading specifically just some tutorials can't make better result for you but searching few forums, blogs, sites about SEO, where expert are available to guide/help you 'll be more effectively.
