They are not such techniques that COUNT most... You need to use DIFFERENT SEO strategies (it depends on the keyword competition about how hard it would be to rank #1... Don't forget that with UNIQUE content (and if you update your site often!) it should be a piece of cake for low and medium keyword competition to rank even in TOP 3 without so many problems... For strong keywords I would suggest web2.0 sites, Forums, Directories & Blog comments!

 

At present, Pure and Unique content is the base of SEO. Editorial Links with high authority value is considered as the best link for any website. Apart from this, if your website is a newly developed website, you need to create a good trust by creating good links through Web 2.0, Q&A, Business Listing (For Local SEO).
Social user engagement plays a vital role in the positive results of SEO.

But I am not Agree with this!
You need to be creative enough to gain backlinks from popular and authoritative websites. That's what search engine counts more in comparison to countless useless links on garbage websites.

 

I think it's a matter of having backlinks from relevant sites and articles. This is nothing new if you've had a common-sense approach to SEO over the years, but mainly focus on your social presence and getting high quality links from authoritative sites as mentioned by @Rudra Pratap above

Quality not quantity! relevant + authoritative = traffic.
