Email marketing will depend on your strategies. There is a thing called email list to get you started.
I've learned from experience that email buying isn't effective and a total waste of time, money and effort.
You can find resources on the web on how you can get started on building an email list.
If you are able to build a list then email marketing wouldn't be that hard, plus it'll help you get off the ground.

First.. let me start with there's a HUGE difference between Email Marketing and Email Spamming. Spamming is the act of obtaining a list of random emails and sending an email of any content without permission. If you Spam you will destroy your reputation and quite honestly I'd be very surprised if you could make even a dollar from doing so in these days.

Email Marketing is the act of sending out relevant content to your customers who have opted in and granted you permission to do so. The most effective campaigns provide the customer with something will want to see or read. Of course subtle or not so subtle selling techniques will be used but the main focus is relevant content.

If I receive an email from an unknown address on a random product I junk it and get pissed. If I receive an email from a web site where I opted in I will read the first email to see if there is anything of value being sent to me. If there is I will probably read every email sent to me. If it's just another chance to sell me a product (excluding discounts and promotions on items I am interested in) I unsubscribe.

You can easily get started by creating a section on your website to get people to subscribe to you. Check out mailchimp and some other email marketing tools/software out there.

Email is very powerful. Be good to your list and your list will be good back. Its printing your money when you suggest a quality product to your list. Spend the time and use good quality traffic so you have decent subscribers. Over deliver in your value

my only worry with emails is the amount of people that will just delete and also if they will just go into spam folders etc i suppose it will depend how you write them and also the subject must be good enough to get them to open them! this will also come from a good database and how many of those trust you as sender maybe? I'm all new to this as well so this is just me guessing in a way ha!

To me, email marketing would be something in the pass.
Even for now, enroll into email marketing will require lots of knowledge, managing effort, and cost. All these will not guarantee good conversion at all. And lastly you need to worry about your domain being listing by domain spamhaus http://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/
Its nasty once you are blacklisted and forget about future success once there is report being made to your domain and email account.
For this reason, there is always advised to use third party email campaign managing service, for example constant Contact. That will cut down the risk to the minimum.
