How's the housing situation near you?

    Hey there,

I just filled in an application to rent a small house somewhere in my neighbourhood. Turns out I probably have to wait three years before I'm on the top of the waiting list! That sucks! Buying is definately not an option yet, since all houses over here are quite expensive.
So, I was wondering how the housing situation is where you live, and whether it's easy for starters to get their first house.
Any opinions? Perhaps some ideas to get something sooner?

For the past number of years there has been a major housing boom in Ireland and prices have been skyrocketing. In Dublin city, where I live, you could pay 300K euros and upwards for a house but most areas in the city it is a lot higher.

It is easy enough to get a mortgage over here as long as you have a well paid job and of course banks will trip over each other to get your money. Getting a mortgage can actually work out cheaper than paying monthly rent and house prices usually rise within a couple of years.

For example, My friends house cost him 90K (UK) and 5 years later he sold it at 160K. It is very common here for people to buy more than one house and sell up a couple of years later to make profit.

Yet I am still a mug paying very high rent to live in the heart of Dublin

Prices are going insane here in Australia. Especially in Perth, W.A. I live in NSW and prices are fairly high here around the 400-500k average for a standard 3brm house (depends on location, if you want anywhere near the coast then double or triple it).

I had my huge house on the market for a year and a half. Could not sell it. Took it off the market disappointed and someone wanted to buy it on the last day. LOL!! Decided to stay here instead. Can't beat the location here. It's so peaceful with neighbours about 80 metres away.

Houses are pretty affordable here, 50k will buy you a nice 3 bedroom bungalow in a rural area. Renting was never really an option for me, why rent when I can pay a mortgage and end up owning the house some day?

Did you leave off a zero, 500k or 50k? They are 600k here for 1100 square feet on a 4000 square foot lot. I tell anybody thinking about buying that they should buy now since we are on pace to hit 4000k (aka four million USD) in 20 years. :D

The only place I know that you can buy a house for 50k is in the bad part of a rustbelt town. Where can you get a decent home on this planet for 50k?

You can live in a condom?

The prices here in the UK are stupidly high, first time buyers just can't get a property.
