Search every keyword related to your field in Google and examine the top ten results.

You should spend 10 - 15 minutes on EACH keyword you run through Google.

Delete the keywords where there are many top authority sites ranking on the first page.

    Good things to find are:
    Wordpress tags
    Forums
    Yahoo Answers
    Facebook Pages

If you find a bunch of these types of results, chances are you can outrank them.

Make sure the keyword you choose has enough searches per month to justify the work. Also, make sure the searches intent will enable you to convert them into a profit.

+1 to Google AdWords' Keyword Planner.
Supplement the results you get there and get more ideas from ÜberSuggest

Why are people suggesting Adwords Keyword Planner and that's it?

That's like someone asking how to build a house and people answering "use a hammer".

As others have said, keyword planner is what your looking for. Its a free tool by google that lets you look at how many times a keyword is put into google over a given period. Its cool that you can customize these results so much, from language to geo location. It will take a little time to learn but its the best tool for what you want to do.

That is exactly how you should start the keyword research. Once you have a specific set of keywords, you can use keyword planner to filter out the ones that has low search volume or suggested bid.

Long tail keywords are easy to rank at the beginning. You'll start to get traffic more quickly.

Instead of targeting one keyword for an article, try 3 - 5 (assuming your content has good word count) as long as you don't stuff them.

+100! For on page SEO keyword research, Matthew just gave you the steps to start your journey. The only other thing to consider is the age of the keywords you are attempting to rank on. A newly popular term that is relevant to your site provides a great opportunity as the top authority sites may not yet focus on it.
