I am a nobody; I know nothing about computer programming or anything technical. I am able to navigate myself through Google and that is the extent of my computing knowledge. I would like to start a blog – and even that is questionable, as to whether that is the medium I should be looking at, I think it is. But being ignorant I do not know where to start, every site tells me they are the best. Clearly they can not all be and I am too naive to know who is right and who is wrong. I have seen that your site has many members with vast experience, something of which I have not. I wish to achieve a blog which will promote a ‘small’ business, but which will ultimately allow me to create a ‘small’ foundation in honour of my father, whose life has just been cut short by laziness, apathy, misunderstanding of his condition, and a family member who has convinced the medical profession that my father’s condition was worse than it was. Basically this family member whom we asked the medical profession to assess, didn’t, as a result my father has been starved to death on the wishes of someone with a brain tumor, who is neither rational nor had my father’s best interests at heart. Clearly I am grieving, I made a promise to my father, I was unable to meet that promise because of circumstances. But, I can in his name help a few other people with the same condition. I genuinely need to get this blog right from the off, for obvious reasons. I have a good work ethic, I will need to work hard to accomplish this. I am not afraid of hard work, as my Blog will show. Can anybody advise what I should / should not do?Where I should / shouldnot go? and anything else I should but do not know? I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have. But would be very grateful if these questions could be via private message, due to the nature of my request and the ultimate responses I may have to give.
Welcome to DP and I am sorry that it is under such sad conditions. There is a Blogging Thread in the Design Section of this forum. That might be a good place to start. Put up a post with your needs, desires, etc., and see what people come back with.
Thank you jrbiz, especially for not giving me misleading info. My Father's funeral is tomorrow, he was one of life's most genuine people. 'Let your yes be yes and your no be no.' and 'never make a promise you cannot or will not keep'. The best of all of his family, myself included. Genuinely, thank you for guiding me.
If you know nothing about websites then I would suggest starting off with a free wordpress blog. Wordpress is a popular CMS and not hard to learn. Sign up at wordpress and just explore the CMS, how to add posts, etc. Look for some WP tutorials to help when you get stuck on something. After a few weeks you'll start to get the hang of things. I taught myself everything by trial and error. I bought a "jokes" website for $50(believe it was off Ebay) and just messed around with it until I learned everything, only had $50 to lose if I messed it up. If I had it to do over I'd go the free route I mentioned above. Sorry for your loss.
Hi, I had once the similar grieve as yours. No, you are not. Under a different circumstances, I will say you have an idea, a motivation, and a writing skill. Those are the only things that you need. Under a different circumstances, I would advise you to go to blogger.com. You can write contents for free, almost unlimited storage, good SEO, you can monetize your content in many ways, and when you are ready you need only $10/year so people can access your site on yourdomainnamehere.com. I can help you with this, for free. I did it once before for someone, in the memory of my late sister. No strings attached, no link back to my name, my ID, my websites, whatsoever. I will setup a basic website --preferrably in Wordpress for convenience sake-- upon which I will guide you how to manage it. Just pay it forward. PM me with your email and we talk.
Th.sigit I thank you, so very much for your kind offer. It is sorely tempting for me to grab your offer with both hands. If I were to accept it though, I would still be ignorant of how to accomplish starting a Blog. I think this is the first occasion in nearly 50years someone has offered to help me like this, it is normally me offering to help others. You have restored my faith in humankind. My Father always told me to paddle my own canoe, then when it goes wrong I have no one else to blame but myself. This Blog could be a complete failure and all of your hard work would be for nought, and I would feel terrible. So thank you kindly, for your most generous offer. But I feel I need to graciously decline, and hope you will guide me, when I eventually post on the Blogging forum as jrbiz suggested.
I observed that people who really can use some hands usually refuses ones when they are offered for the chance. It is in the mentality I guess, and maybe I am one of those, too, but essentially I can understand that. Deep condolences for your loss. I believe that those loved ones are going to a better place, where we will be going to sooner or later. As for your blog, when you post your queries to other sections of this forum, I am sure I will be notified and will try my best (and so do many people here that are more expert than me). Sigit
