Recommend a work position

Hi,
I just need a small recommendation on a work position / title.

I have been working with an IT company for like 7 years now, and been involved in concepts and execution with development, design, testing , infra hardware teams and have fair knowledge and an active interest in all of them, and will continue, I also now plan moving towards IT Security ( just started learning into , might take me an year or 2 to consider my self for a related job )

So far I have been working as a Project coordinator, have also been in touch with our clients recommending them solutions etc.

The company I work for has given me a chance to select a new position , here I need your help, do you recommend I select to be an IT Consultant ( after 7 years of active involvement in various IT fields ) how will it affect my career choice of getting into IT security in coming years ?

Should I select something which relates both to IT security and my current work profile ?

Or is there any other position you recommend ?

The best thing you can do is to improve your skills and be the best in your business.
If you are really the best it does not matter what you do on.
This world is changing, and after a couple of years, your company may not be,
but if you are really the best in your business you will always be successful and have substantial demand.

While I follow that, currently I am required to complete a formality by choosing a job title ( for my current work ) , do you think I should chose it as IT CONSULTANT listing all those areas like Dev, testing , design etc as consulting areas or domains I am extending my duties and later when I improve my self or move into another field I follow the same title in the area or field of IT Security ?

 

IT Consultant is more general title and may include consulting on IT Security and many more

 

With your solid understanding of IT and liasing with clients recommending them solutions, you are very suited to be IT Consultant.
To sound even better (if you can negotiate with your superior/bosses), I highly recommend Information Technology Consulting Manager or in short IT Consulting Manager. Note: In this competitive business world, and if you have the foundation in employer-employee relationship, anything can be discussed.

 

Don't sell yourself short! Walk in confident, head high and advise them you will be the new VP.

IT Consultant is suitable and IT Consulting Manager is even better.

 

IT Consultant is broader and better suited for someone like yourself. But who am I to tell you what to do. You do you.

 

Well I guess, you should select something that relates both to IT security and on your current work profile, how about an IT Specialist?

 

How about IT Manager? It would suit you.

 

Check the available positions and if you feel you can do it then check if the company is good and you think you can learn more then apply.

Its totally depends upon you and your choice. You have 7 year of experience in a specific field and if you go for next you have to prepare yourself for a new thing and have to learn something that will take your time even years.. If you are satisfied with your present post and this giving you a better living and you feel good to do this type of work then u must remain with this instead of investing your precious time in anyway. But if u have any trouble with this post or u want more financial power from new post and you have still courage to learn new things and to do hard work then u can chose next field(IT Security)

 

As the (once upon a time) manager of a team of IT Techs in the design, development and customization of financial systems, all I can share is my experience.

I stayed away from people who simply called themselves IT Consultants. My logic was this: If a person is going to be a consultant, they should be confident enough in themselves to define their speciality in their title. Otherwise, I feared getting somebody who was consulting because nobody would hire them, and believe me, it happens.

I eventually went into the consulting business and called myself a IT Financial Systems Consultant, specializing in Dun & Bradstreet's Millennium Systems, which were originally known as McCormack & Dodge Millennium Systems.

My point is, anybody who knows IT knows their are no "Jack of All Trades" is this business and, you want to catch the eye of a prospective client in one line. He/She is more like to read your resume amongst the many others on their desk because your title caught their eye.
