I am setting up a blog and forum that will be a resource for an online community. Eventually I would like to offer my consulting services and other products on that site. I would also like to promote myself and my knowledge to prospective hiring managers now. My question is, so that I can achieve the above, should I create my social media accounts in my name or the name of my company - or both? At present I only have a LinkedIn account in my name. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
i think you should create both but wait more advices. Edit:On FB just create a page with your personnal account
Thanks @JackOlson why do you suggest just my own name? and @arnould why do you think I should create both? That sounds like a lot of work.
What would you want to promote first, as a startup? You or your brand? If it is more important to promote your company brand then create a page like that and then eventually promote you under your company banner.
if the company requires you to create for them, then it should be names after them. you can have a portfolio on your own, that you can show to hiring managers.
I think that it's better to create the profile of your name to make it more personal. You can mention your company on your profile and posts that you will create.
If you are the consultant and see yourself doing this role for a very long time, then create it under your own name. However.... if you plan to create a brand and eventually make money and sell the business or even move away from consultancy in the future, therefore hiring managers/ other consultants to run the business when you are not around, then I suggest creating your social media presence under your brand/company name. The downside of the first option is if you decide to sell the company in any form or want to step away from managing it, then your clients will expect you to be the main point of contact etc. So think about it before making a decision.
Definitely both only take into consideration this: There are some social media that doesn’t allow opening pages with company names like Facebook. You should take this into consideration and open them with your name and then create a business page with the company name. Even do their other social media like Twitter that allows you to open accounts with company names so you should include the company name in those that allow it.
If you are going to use for business than create it by business name and only follow or fan related to business. If you are going to use for personal to add friends and family or general than use your name. (don't mix it up to add client/customer and friends in same account)
As you mentioned that you would also like to promote yourself and your knowledge to prospective hiring managers. So it would be better to create social media account with your own name.
