You do know what copywriting is... right?

Here's something to take note of...

    Copywriting is NOT article writing.

Writing articles and blog posts isn't copywriting.

Copywriting is the science of writing sales letters, emails, postcards,
and other promotional material with a simple goal in mind...

    To SELL something.

Just thought I should share this because I see a lot of confused members
here that don't seem to know the difference.

    Peace.

Unless those articles and blog posts are actually intended to sell something (product or backlinks), in which case I'd say this usage is fairly defensible.

A blog post that sells something? Doubtful.

You don't "sell" an e-book with an article. If that was the case, people would
be adding Buy Now buttons at the end of their articles.

If you were using them to sell or help sell a product or service, then you do so
by creating pre-sell content. And to be honest, the majority of people online (and even here)
aren't creating that type of content.

You'll find that an enormous number of people who are "freelance writers" got into the business because of blog posts, landing pages and schemes that convince them it's easy money. As such, they have little idea of the technicalities of writing in any form. Add the modern confusion over words like "editing" and even "research" (believe it or not, I've had people call plagiarism "research") and it's even worse.

Admittedly, it's a confusing business. But you're absolutely right, of course: copywriting is a separate skill to writing, just as writing books is a separate skill to writing articles, blogs and other content.

That's a part of content marketing. You could put copywriting into the content marketing box, but it would still be distinct from articles and posts designed to sell, IMHO.

Copywriting is also an important method of the web marketers to deliver interesting and engaging content as well as reaching the right audience for the particular brand or service.

Probably the confusion is in the word in itself. Most people think copywriting is same as copyrighting.

    Dear No Sweat Profit,
Please tell me know the differences between copyrighting and copywriting. I am confused between them too.

Copyrighting is the legal right of an author, playwright, publisher, composer, etc... to exclusive distribution of their material (i.e. - who owns the material and has the right to sell or distribute it)
Copywriting is described by the OP and is the technical skill involved in writing materials for the purpose of selling

I would also mention ChazB that Copyrighting also applies to the license owner of the intellectual property. This is common in media such as movies, music, and literature. Many times these will also have multiple forms of copyrights withing one pieces. A song for instance always has two: a composition and a performance. One or both can be licensed out to a third part (usually a record label) so that they can legally sell the intellectual property on be half of the copyright owner.

I would agree that they're distinct forms of writing, but both sales copy and informational articles have a common goal of pushing users toward some kind of conversion. There is some overlap in intention and skills required.

They are two tools in the arsenal that a site can use to get to a goal. In some respects it is the same distinction between a news article and an editorial.

Nice comparison. Of course, some news agencies don't see the difference =D
