What is RSS feeds

Can someone please explain to me what is an RSS feed and how can it help your website??

RSS is a way to syndicate your content. For instance, by creating an XML file (feed), users are able to get your content without coming to your site, they can read it with a feed reader (like for blogs)

It's allow you to share it as well, if you've got interesting content, other webmasters may be willing to publish it on their sites.
It's easily done : they fetch your feed and format it to be displayed on their pages.

RSS is a great way to let people know about your site, have a look at the "recent blog" line near my avatar (don't bother it's in french ), it's display the last entry of my feed.
