Sudden loss of indexed pages

    Hi,

Seems this latest round of Google Flu is affecting me too.

Our whole network seems to be affected. For example our car site as per sig , has lost about 90% of its indexed pages ... dropping from over 20K to 1.5K, Traffic obviously have shot downhill.

Our other major sites have also lost about 40% of its traffic.

All this in the last 2 to 3 days.

Strangely enough, it seems that our main keyword positions havent been affected yet which makes me worried that its something else.

Anyone know of any reason why sites would drop drastically in indexed pages but keeping its main keyword positions, in some cases improving too.

Have I been linking to the wrong places or lost some big links?

It also happened to my sites. I think the problem is temporary and everything will get back to normal soon. Or so I think.

I hope so .... Sometimes I think Google does this randomly just to stop people from figuring out their Algo.

Did you run the 2 sites under the same host company. If that's the problem of the network, it will be slowly comes back. Track it in the last few days. But if it still keeps going down, then you'd better take some action.

Different Hosting for me.... But some interlinking which has always been there.

Whats strange is that my major keyword positions have stayed pretty much the same ... just that they have deindexed 90% of my pages in 3 days.

Funny you mention interlinking. I have started to remove many of those and some sites are recovering.

The site hit hardest is actually a forum so pages being updated shouldnt be a problem.

Reapr have the same problem? when did it happen?

One thing that this could be related to is that I lost a high ranking PR8 link early December on one of my sites.

Would them being interlinked affect my sites this much.. I mean losing like 95% of my indexed pages.... My sites themselves without these links are quite well backlinked. Also I am just losing pages whilst SERPs for major keywords are not efffected that much.

Interesting if this is the reason.

Obviously by losing so many pages, my long tail traffic has pretty much died off.

    Thx Trich,

I've also heard rumors that its a new OOM penalty, which is a bit worrying.

Xenyo.....are there any differences/similarities in the url structure between the pages that stayed indexed and the ones that didnt?? If Google changed the way they index dynamic links, which they have done in the past, this could explain why some pages stayed and others didnt.

Also any similarities between the deindexed pages themselves. Did only store, forum, heavy dynamic pages, etc get deindex or is it pretty random?

Still looking into the details but its seems pretty random. Its happened to my sites pretty much network wide and they are a mix ... forums, blogs, article sites, affliates, shops...

The one thing that I can think of is that I have been actively building links recently so the OOM rumor sounds likely. I have brought links but even sites that have had natural link growth have been penalised. A bit silly of Google to tell us to get links to get your site well recieved and then penalise you when you do ... but then again .... Google seems confused these days.

It sort of looks like a 2-3 months roll back but cache shows new pages. I'd understand if my keywords were also affected but my main keywords have kept first page status but lost nearly all of my tail traffic.

Seems from here and other forums that something is up but Matt Cutts have confirmed that he isnt aware of any recent changes or algos .. I hope its just another Google glitch and things pick up soon before X-Mas....

I noticed a trend about last August started to remove crosslinks. Saw some improvement this last week about 2-3 days ago.

Though I would be hesitant to say exactly that crosslinking was the problem.

The procedure seems random and quite frustrating.

LOL. Why would they do that? Its an automated process and they do not show bias - positive or negative - towards anyone as far as the search engine is concerned. Of course, they may intervene if someone or organisation tries to manipulate them e.g. BMW a few months ago.
