Transferring a WP installation - how to trasfer Media files (images)?

Discussion in 'WordPress' started by andrej, Jan 12, 2015.

When I'm transferring a WordPress website from one hosting account to a new one, I first install WordPress on the new hosting account, then in the old WP admin panel I go to Tools > Export and I export the database. Then I import the database into the WP admin panel on the new installation. I also copy my WP theme's files to the wp-content/themes/ folder and activate the theme.

The process above works for me well. However, my problem is how to transfer all the media files (all the images in my posts) to the new installation so that all loads like on the old website. Is there any good plugin for this?

I tried that, but it didn't work. Maybe there is a plugin for transferring the media files?

The best thing to do is to take a backup of the entire site and transfer it all over, that way any plugins, customizations you have done will also transfer over.

But since you have already started, the uploads folder is where wordpress stores the media files by default, but some themes and plugins may upload other media in different folders.

You need to move the all files to live server and then need to configure the all code at server. If you need any help to fix your problem then let me know.

You do not want to do that. There is no need to install a fresh Wordpress. Just company all of your website's files over to the new server. Do not do an export inside Wordpress, it is pretty useless. Go into phpMyAdmin and dump your entire database then run the SQL file on your new web host.

If you use cPanel then go to backup option and create a backup of home directory and upload that backup to your new server and run backup restore it will automatically install your database, media files and all settings without any changes.

For client work, I migrate development sites to new hosting locations several times a week. The best and easiest way I've found to do this is using the Backup Buddy plugin. You can easily create a full-site backup and migrate with a couple clicks. It maintains all posts, pages, plugins, media files, assets, site settings--everything--and lets you migrate to any new location pretty quickly and easily.

Thanks for your tip. Does the Backup Buddy plugin also transfer the database?

Yes it does--so when you migrate the site to its new location, it's an identical copy of the one at the original location. All widgets, data, settings, databases, plugins, media, etc.

OK, thanks for your reply. The plugin is a little bit expensive, but I will consider buying it in future.
