First of all the above guy is alright that the content is scrapped, Google gives priority to original content. Why you are getting less traffic from Google search is because of your low domain authority which is 33 as compared to other websites which you are competing with you this is lower.

So my advice to you would be:-
    1. If you are content aggregator focus more on building strong social media links
    2. Also have in bound links from website that have higher domain authority.
    3. Ensure that your readers go back satisfied. This actually matters because no google rewards website which help users with relevant content.
    4. Little design changes

in case you need more help message me directly

Then why would Google be interested in sending searchers to you for when it might as well send them to the source?

Digg is an authority site with around 576,812 backlinks (alexa).
As per my knowledge pligg sites don't rank well due to duplicate contents.
Press release will help you in gaining traffic but not in seo if you have duplicate contents.

There is no solution. You have created a site that searchers do not want in their search results as you add no value to the web. Google and the other search engines have responded accordingly.

You are competing with some tough competition. For Digg I think it was the other way around, there rank could have been better than websites submitting content to it.
What you can do is go for a similar redesign as digg+ come up with some original content and usp

Why? Why would a search engine want to send a searcher to your rewritten version when it can send them to the original? Searchers want the original.

Agent000 is right the old ways of SEO are gone. Help the reader and google will help you. Find your customer needs and optimize your website for it.

If you aggregate content then try some other marketing medium like emails or something.

The first thing you need to is define your marketing strategy and goals. In this you just detail out the behavior of your audience, their needs, what you want them to do etc.
Based on this adopt acquisition channels, You can start of by for example answering people on quora on questions related to your domain.
Here are the answers to your questions
    1. About the writers, please hire quality writers, $2 per 100 words writers do not produce quality content.
    2. Google knows who produced the original content- so don't worry about people copying you. If they give you backlinks good for you.
    3. No need to change the domain if it has brand value. But do work on the design. even simple things like color have a big impact on users.

Let me know if you need any further help.
