Meme websites are sites full of images with funny text over them, made with the intent of sharing. SEO is extremely difficult for sites like this.
Memes website are hard to manage. SEO is difficult , the main factor is backlins/social media and Popularity/activity/comments on each meme.
I think the idea is that if the image is popular, and if your link is on the image, or such that when the image is clicked the user comes to your site, (or underneath the image) you might then gain additional traffic to your site. I would not think that getting links on meme sites is an effective SEO solution any more then gaining links from any other site that has a high PR.
There won't be many sites that will get valuable traffic from meme sites. Looking at memes and see a link for a plumber, nah - not clicking that Looking at memes and see a link for an online education site, nah - not clicking that Looking at memes and see a link for another meme site - yeah, might click that. Equally, when the search engine bots find the links and put them through their algorithms they're unlikely to find them to be targeted nor to have quality.
