You can get a good VPS for like $5 - $10 a month. I use the site LowEndBox and look for specials. Some providers will give a special deal available only through that site.

I have a VPS with these specs for $5 a month. Should be more than adequate:

    2048 MB RAM

    2048 MB vSwap RAM

    100 GB SSD/RAID 10

    3000 GB Bandwidth

    4 CPU Core / 100%

Not everyone can go for a vps. What you need is to find a shared host that does not allow for unlimited websites, and preferably one that uses cloud linux. if you see a company offering unlimited, then dont touch them.

@KillaKeith, what you get for $5 is great, but you probly know how to install things like the control panel, or do it all by ssh, the average user is only familiar with cpanel. If she needs cpanel + management = $$$$$

Do these sites actually require WordPress? It is bloatware and the majority of sites running it could instead be in static HTML (there are CMSes available for producing this) or a much lighter script. Everyone jumps on the overrated WordPress bandwagon far too easily.

You should also evaluate your HTML code, JS, CSS and general WordPress set-up such as plugins and caching (in terms of a WordPress plugin but also HTTP directives for CSS, JS and images). Sometimes caching plugins can make very little difference.

Need a link or we are flying blind here but for starters go check google page speed.

Also, in cpanel look for "optimize website" and make sure its set to compress all content which is option 2.

If its hostgator, optimization won't help. I was with them 4-5 years ago when the support was still excellent, and all my sites were painfully slow -> things improved dramatically when I changed hosts.

@op, One thing that I did not mention is this. There are many "hosting" companies that use hostgator. If you are leaving them due to performance, you dont want to end up being worse off.

To find out if a "hosting company" is using hostgator, type in :2087 after their URL. If it says "websitewelcome (dot) com" in the URL, then you know they use hostgator and you are going to have the exact same problems.

Because you showed boobies and your site became really popular.

In all seriousness, what type of site is it, and have you done anything to improve the speed of the site?

Do NOT listen to those suggesting you get a cheap VPS. It will be more trouble then it is worth.

Using too many plugins can slow the site down. What plugins are you using?

That and the theme (which is horrific - in terms of under the hood, I won't comment on appearance), which is loading lots of JS files. Probably 99% of them aren't needed and what is could be combined into one.

But also your host. Response times are incredibly slow, especially if I compare it with the hosting company I am currently using - Hawk Host (which incidentally uses Cloud Linux). They have data centres, including an EU one (Amsterdam). You should consider looking for a similar host, most of them usually have coupons available, or discounts via affiliate links.

However, even if you do change hosts, don't avoid fixing the problems with your site. It will make a huge difference.

By the way, I noticed on the "apply form" that there is a question (probably to overcome spammers). You might want to look at some kind of hidden anti-spam/bot, as 1) it's without explanation and 2) it's annoying for non-spam human visitors.

there are many sites placed with your sites on shared hosting. I have my shared hosting also. Its speed depend upon the traffic on other sites.
You are bound with other site traffic in shared hosting.
