Do you need a plain Linux VPS or do you also need a control panel with it?

No, not for $10 a month. For something that low price your VPS will be unmanaged and you will not have cPanel which does much of the managing of a VPS for you if you have no experience. If you have never managed a VPS before, you will be completely lost. With an unmanaged plan, if you screw something up, you have no support to help you fix things.

The absolute cheapest VPS I have seen is OVH. If you are ready to go with unmanaged and your budget cannot be increased, then you could look at them.

A VPS requires a little more memory to run cPanel than a VPS without cPanel. The cheapest I have seen for a managed VPS with cPanel/WHM is $30 a month for a 2 core VPS with 2 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of data transfer. For the "managed" portion, they will handle updates to the operating system and software like Apache and MySQL installed with the VPS. Managing anything you install such as Wordpress is your responsibility. You may find something a little cheaper, but when you are adding cPanel plus management, it will cost more.

WHM (WebHost Manager) and cPanel are server administration tools created by the cPanel company. WHM is also provided and that is the tool that is used to update the server software including the OS, MySQL, and Apache web server. You can update the server OS, MySQL, and Apache with a few mouse clicks. Also included when you have WHM/cPanel is reseller functionality so you can carve up your VPS plan and sell space to others to help pay for it. WHM/cPanel will handle your email server, setting up email accounts, DNS, spam protection, and stuff like that.

If you only have 5 blogs, unless the traffic is quite high on them, I'm not sure I'd say your ready for a VPS just yet. You have to remember, cPanel/WHM VPS license is between $10-15/mo alone, plus cost of VPS itself, so your not likely to get that on your budget. It would have to be managed manually (without cPanel) or pay fee to hosting company to do it.

I'd suggest staying with a good shared/reseller hosting account until your needs/budget rises if you want to add more elements such as cPanel/WHM to your VPS. There are other control panels available for free but aren't as elaborate.

For $10/month and 5 Blogs i would recommend you to go with a Shared Hosting rather than a VPS as the cPanel License would only cost you in between 10-15$. Or you can go with free control panels like kloxo with a basic VPS if you can manage these free control panels.

Just a sidenote, there's a cheap alternative to cPanel which is working really well, and that's Plesk. So if you're on a low budget but still want a VPS, I would go for a provider that offers Plesk panel, that will bring your costs down a bit.

In terms of your budget, some have mentioned you may be better off on shared hosting, and I think they are right. If you're looking at DigitalOcean though, I would recommend Atlantic.net who offers an affordable cloud VPS option, starting at about $10 a month, although if you add cPanel into the mix, it's going up to $25 and a bit out of the price range that you're talking. Hope this info helps.

Are any of your blogs monetized? If you want to get a good standard spec. VPS plan with a control panel then you are going to need at the very least about $20 to your budget. You can look around and find other control panels but cPanel has many good features especially when it comes to hosting WordPress blogs.

5 blogs are least likely to require a VPS just now. I see you are preparing for a big jump, but staying with a good shared web plan with unlimited traffic is the best solution for you, IMHO. A lot of companies here, including ours, offer VPS. Some of our offers fit your request, yet choosing shared plan is still much recommended.

This is a great deal with any of their hosting plans/packages... It's a recurring discount as well, meaning it permanently brings the monthly price of hosting down, for the lifetime of your account ;) Thanks for sharing :)

What I would recommend is to get yourself the cheapest Digital Ocean plan which is 5 USD / month, then installing one of these cpanel alternatives on it, I'd recommend ZPanel for your use case, it should suit you quite well and it will be cheaper than any reliable shared hosting out there.

If you need help setting it up I can provide you with an install service for a few bucks.

Softsys Hosting is my recommendation for your vps. All 5 blogs will be hosted here as per your requirement. Also you can customize your plan accordingly.

wherever I go - I see these posts about kvchosting. Half of them state this company is good - but without proofs. The other half is from angry customers, who say this company is a pile of crap.

Really, this market is oversaturated with offers, why do all people always mention this company? There are thousands and even millions of GREAT hosting companies out there - why need to mention this bad one?
