One trick to getting listed to with the Yahoo Directory for free is to start your site as a non-commercial resource.
That means no ads, no products for sale, no discernible way to make money found anywhere on the site - just free information.
If the information is quality, you can often apply and get listed with Yahoo Directory's free standard listing:

    http://add.yahoo.com/fast/add?86307

Doesn't always work, but it has on many occasions for me.

Note: This is for the homeschool category. To see if free listings are available for your own category, just navigate to the category you want to be listed in and click the Suggest a Site link in the upper right corner.
If the category is accepting free non-commercial listings, you'll see an option for the free standard listing.
If you're submitting to a section of Yahoo that doesn't have an option for free listings, there's a site available that provides a nifty workaround.
In general, I find starting sites as free informational resources makes link building much easier. Then you can fold in the commercial elements later. Obviously, this idea is best applied to new sites, since it can be a pain dismantling an established site just for a directory listing.

I think it is not free. You have to pay 299$ yearly to list your site on yahoo directory. And, there is no free directory listing option on Yahoo directory

You can suggest your website for free as well. If your site is really good, they might accept it.

Yahoo directory is free but no guarantee, you can suggest a link to Yahoo Directory for free but it would either take them forever to review your link or not accepting them, exactly like DMOZ. But if you want your website to be listed in Yahoo Directory in just a day or two with a guarantee then you would have to pay nearly $300 annually, having a link in Yahoo Directory is very important as just like DMOZ is since both of them are competitors and you will get a nice backlink but for $300 you could pay a good numbers of high PR backlinks and it would be more wise for you to go that direction instead of Yahoo Directory.

One high PR backlink (yahoo directory) or 5 or more same PR or higher PR backlinks for same price, which one would you take? Exactly, my thought too.

Paying for Yahoo directory would be waste of money, in this amount of $299 you can tons of edu backlinks and quality content.
