What software do you recommend for starting your own link directory with paid listings?

phpld is arguably the directory market leader and it is a quality well supported script that is innovative and is being continually upgraded

I've really had good results with the script I've been using at List My Niche Directory. It's not free but it certainly is powerful with lots of goodies included.

I used wsnlinks for a while but as far as integration with Paypal phpld works rather well. If you're using your own credit card deal like verisign or authorize.net then phpld would not be the ideal choice and I'd suggest wsnlinks.

But remember, standing out is good sometimes, going along with the crowd can get you less seen ;)

Depends on your experience in this field. If you have never operated a directory, and not really sure if this is what you want to do, and can profit on, then go with eSyndiCat Pro or PHPLD.
These are easy to learn, modify, and operate on a "beginner level", but.... in the long run, unfortunately neither eSyndiCat or PHPLD are capable of running on a large database of ....say couple of million links. Simple math: Dynamic PHP + MySQL + 50GB of data + 20,000 simultaneous users = server crash + lag + ... hell.
Yet, between the two of them, I'd pick eSyndiCat: http://www.esyndicat.com

I love phpLD, especially the payment features in the 3.x version(s). I would highly recommend the phpLD script :D

I suggest you look into SnowBlind Directory Script and Cantufind's PhpLynx. PhpLynx isn't out yet (except for beta testers), but it has a feature list that looks very promising.

What both of these scripts have over PhpLD and IndexScript is more focus on spam-blocking measures. This is vital if you want to have a directory that's easy to manage and not overwhelmed with auto-submitted junk.

http://www.creascripts.com for me. Though I haven't used any other so can't really compare. :D

Certainly haven't found any need to use another as it's admin interface is nice and easy to use plus, once past the lifetime fee for the software, there's no extra to pay and no directory or site you do is required to link back to the software creators site (if you don't want to - there's an affiliate scheme though so some choose to)

For ease of use, phpLD can't be beat. From a pure SEO standpoint, a custom script would be best.
