Someone I know wants to start an online shop using PrestaShop. He enquired about what kind of hosting will support it. At first it is not going to be very big. But he is capable of making it big. Will shared hosting do at the beginning ? Or need a higher hosting package ? Please guide.

Thanks. How much GB should I ask first ? I mean hard disk space.

Also in case of bandwidth I guess 40 GB per month will be fine.

for e-commerce site that aimed to be big in a year or two, its the best to start with VPS plan and proceed from there and up to dedicated server in future. Why? its because of performance, dedicated IP and SSL consideration. VPS is the best bet.

I would recommend Hostgator, Bluehost or Webhostingbuzz. These are good place for ecommerce site.

    Thank you @HassanKhalid , @charlesgan

The very reason I started this thread is that I was told that for social networks and and eShops, not to choose a shared hosting. I was not sure. Say if I go for a VPS, how much will the plan I need will cost ?

You need to consider the traffic you expect in the first months. I am using prestashop with 1000 products and 500 UV/Day. With this datas, the shared hosting is not enough for Presta. This platform is using alot of resouces because it is adding to DB all data : visitors, refferers, all the rubbish you don`t need. For example, my website has a DB of 300MB and that is large ! What i recommend is that u start with VPS ( at least 512 MB RAM, 4GB space , and Quad-Core processor ) if u have more than 100 products and u expect more than 200-300 UV/Day.
If u consider VPS, u need to calculate that u need management too ( if u don`t know how to configure/manage a web server ).
I say a good VPS with minimum specs and management, starts from 50$/month.

I think PrestaShop is the best choice as you are starting with small shop then PrestaShop is capable of making it large. It is a free and open source solution, it is written in PHP and based on smarty search engine. PrestaShop software is lightweight and really flexible. PrestaShop will provide you the best customer services. It is good for starting a successful online store. Doesn't matter you are computer geek or just a casual user it will be beneficial for you.
