Twitter mentions with my handle, but not me

Twiiter mentions show my handle / username, but all of the tweets are in foreign languages. Most that I have looked at show my handle within the tweet. Does this mean that my handle / username has been compromised? Or do foreign countries re-use twitter handles? I had created this handle several years ago but never used it / and now that I want to start using it for a business related event, I see all these mentions. Can anyone fill me in and provide enlightenment? Maybe being a newbie, I am just missing something. Thanks.

They are spam mentions to get you to look at the link that is also in the tweet. You'll find they probably repeat the tweet over and over with other names in them. Most people check their mentions so it's a great way to get noticed - and reported!

If I'm right, and they are spam, take 10 minutes at some stage to work through them and report the users. If you want to use this handle for something businesslike it may be worth having a go at clearing out any junk!

Thank you. I have a 4 character handle, which is small.I also get mentions for handles that contain the "string" of my handle, so if I'm abcde, I also get mentions for abcdef and abcdefg. <-- Is this normal "twitter" or is this also spam? Thanks much.

I have no sympathy for this. Twitter has way too much of this already - people squatting on names that they usually forget they even registered. They should free up any name that is not used within 3 months.

Yep, and every time this has ever happened to me it has been a link to a website that is attempting to spread viruses. I flag these messages as spam every time I see them.

That sounds like some kind of a glitch that twitter probably isn't aware of.
