    Hi Paresh,

This is a complicated question which depends more on what you're intending for this particular page.

    A couple scenarios:

This is a Page/Site You Want to Rank

When you have outgoing links you're going to be leaking link juice off your page (read more about link juice). Link juice is a concept we as SEO's use to model the ranking power we get from incoming links. We receive link juice from incoming links from other websites. The more PR/PA/DA/backlinks that these sites have, the more link juice we get. We redistribute this link juice throughout our sites using internal links.

When you have a bunch of outgoing links on a particular page, then that link juice is leaving your website.

There is no limit to the number of links you can have in a 500 word article, as long as its readable. But typically I try to stick to a maximum of 1 link per 100 words. If you go beyond this, it's not going to get you penalized. It's just going to have a hard time ranking since all that link juice is falling off the page.

This is a Page/Site You Want to Use to Rank Other Sites

Perhaps this is a directory or private blog that you're using to rank other sites. When you get an outbound link (OBL) count of over 20, Google starts to recognize this page as a directory. Which then diminishes the ranking power of this site.

    Hope this helps,

Links to your site or links in general?
If to your site I would recommend adding 1 - 2 and few to other websites.
If in general then as much as it is logical.

My experience said maximum 3 backlinks is good.
Insert anchor text with your long tail keywords there, and you will amazing with your result.
Many from my sites boost in serp in no time if you shoot long tail keywords, bring us visitors with credit card on their hand

Just don't spam it out. If they're relevant links you should be good...of course, it's hard to imagine a page with 100 links that are all relevant unless it's a directory of some sort. If you're just dealing with a typical article and being natural, you probably wouldn't have more than a few

It is good to think like a natural web page builder. Sometimes you could have 5 links or so on a page but it usually would be a technical article with links to references that have to do with the subject of the article.

If you just throw up some content on say Tahiti Vacations and have links to - Viagra - affiliate shoe site - diet blog - etc you scream paid links.

On the other hand if you have a Tahiti Vacations page with links to Tahiti government website - Tahiti weather - Tahiti hotels - Tahiti restaurant - it looks legit.

Good point Agent000, I should've been clearer...when they said 500 word page content I was thinking more of a typical blog post or about page. There are definitely other situations (like a forum) where you would have more links...

1 or 2 links can be put in Content. If you are inserting more than 2 links then it will go to spamming.

Be as natural as possible. Use maximum of 1-2 links and make sure you add it in some long term keywords as anchor text. Over optimization will always lead you to penalties. Also lot of OBL will distract the reader from your content. None will want the reader to leave your website halfway by clicking the reference links they provided.
Also always use the option to open the link in new tab, else the user will stick on the reference link and will never come back. If you use the new tab option your site will be open all the time the user reads the linked content and help you grow the Alexa Rank

    http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-many-links-per-page/

It's not a new knowledge. If you search, you can find many other pages about 100 links rule.
Max 100 links on a page is an old rule. But it's not a strict rule. You can place 500 links on a page if it looks normal. It depends on how you make them looking normal.

I suggest you go for only one link for 500 word content. Sometimes, don't even add your link at all, rather do co-citation to authority sites in your niche. This will help you look way more natural. There is a fine line between optimizing and spamming in the eye of Google, just be careful.
