Is Provoking a War of Comments Fruitful?

All of us must have seen comment wars below an article/blog, where 2 or more people, who seem to disagree on something, launch a full scale war of words. Now, I have also seen posts where these arguments are provoked so as to have a long line of comments. Is it a good idea to do so?

    sometimes , yes
just make sure YOU, the site owner are NOT involved in it

involve someone else, or even another id
it will come back to haunt you , in future.
never as admin or site owner

    Listen to your sixth sense

if YOU feel it isn't right, then DON"T do it

nobody is responsible for your actions, but you
not me, not anyone else we can advice you ,

but its you , who will CHOOSE to follow it or NOT.
good or bad consequences are yours to deal with, alone

    Remember that.

Yes as long as the comments are quality comments.

I'd love to post a link to my jokes sites, but they are filled with racist comments so maybe not appropriate: what's the forum rules for that sort of link?

Got a post targeting "white people jokes", 9353 comments (top 10 in Google for relevant SERPs) and it's pretty much hundreds of racists trashing one another!

Very distasteful and the irritating thing is the site barely makes me any money :-( Doesn't help AdSense banned the domain (due to the racism) so have to use Chitika which isn't as good.

I find my sites with discussions on rather than trolling are much more rewarding, good to have a heated, but not disrespectful discussion with your visitors and Google seems to like it: comments are a sign of a popular site, think about your retention rate and your lowered bounce rate if users are sticking around to comment and read comments (metrics Google uses in one form or another).

Thanks a lot @parvesh & @SEO-Expert. That was helpful. So, a comment war is good but should not contain objectionable content.
