Well, until recently i wouldnt have suggested Joomla because there was no extensions developed for Escort Directory or Agency...part of the reason is that such an extension could not get listed in Joomla extensions directory where most developers sell their extensions because Joomla will not list any websites with Adult content.Having said that, Joomla is very powerful and easy to use/learn supported by a huge community of developers and users so that was my first choice when I was starting an escort directory. After developing both Joomla and Drupal Based escort directories I can speak from experience and confirm that you can use either of these although Drupal will give you much more flexibility. Bear in mind though that developing an escort directory could take anything between 3-6 months so its more than likely you're better of buying an already completed turnkey solution in which case you're better of buying a product based on open source CMS rather than custom built product simply because Open Source offers much greater choice of add on's plugins and templates either for free or very little $$, as well as, much greater user and developer base which in turn results in more updates, support etc...

If you're looking to build a really good directory with open source CMS's, you'll be in for a frustrating time i can tell you. YOu have banner modules, with classified components that have to be hacked, no proper user control panels(user, escort, escort agency, adult clubs, massage) all categories and location and search filters, languages..and the list goes on. They're ok for small one city directories maybe but that will be it.

We've built many for single cities to world wide adult directories. you just can't compare a custom made directory with an open source apart form the cost of course but put this against the time you spend on it to the money you spend on trying to get it working as a custom directory.

We have some unique money streams also with a token system to give all your users a shop to sell items(private photo's, videos, webcam time or anything else they'd like) and the owner will get a percentage and also to offer your users a website, they set this up in their dashboard and use as their own and again, the directory owner will get a percentage of everything sold. Agencies can add all their ladies, full banner manager, adult clubs dashboard as well as blogs all the bells and whistles. I have to disagree with you (only partially) on using an open source CMS for building really good and functional escort directory. Some great, internationally known and well established escort directories were built on Open Source foundations. Take naughtyreviews.com as an example (built on Drupal).

I do agree with you along the lines of "don't try this at home/alone" unless you are a seasoned developer because you will need custom developed modules/plugins (not hacks) specific to escort directories and you won't find any of those plugins listed in any of the Open Source plugin directories like JED etc.

*Disclaimer: I have developed a number of Open Source escort directory plugins/modules/components (purpose built, no hacking involved, and suitable for local or international directories), both for custom built and turnkey scripts which I will not link to from here because I'd prefer to keep this thread a constructive discussion rather than hijacking it with my own sales pitch.

I understand what you're saying but you are still limited on what you can do if you want to give more than creating a profile listing site. I'm sure you'd have a lot of fun creating 4 seperate user managers, token system as currency throughout the site, shop features for all users so that they can sell anything they like, website template system where the users can buy a website which would be populated with the details they have in their profile, banner advertisement system inetgrated, vip profile ranking, seperate classified listsings area, booking manager, locations and categories manager, user interaction for marketing..and the list goes on and on. I wouldn't like to collect the bill on this work to get it to a high standard on a opensource platform. Custom directories are built specifically for these tasks. Although a custom directory would be more work to create from the ground up but how many components, modules and plugins would you need to work in harmony together? lots, and will they work in harmony together?

OK for a simple escort submission but any more than that, it will be difficult, costly and time consuming.
naughtyreviews.com is a good escort reviews and classified site that has been around for years but this is big budget site who have a full time development team behind them.Apart from this, all the top Adult directories are custom made solutions. Drupal is ok but again, a masive amount of work to get everything working together.

I think we are both actually agreeing on the point, just from different perspectives, and two different $$ markets. The way I look at the Open Source CMS is: a good starting point, foundation, that can be built upon with custom, purpose built modules specifically for escort directories.
Anyone thinking they can just download any Open Source CMS and then again download more plugins from the CMS plugins directory to make a decent escort directory is in for a lot of time wasted and disappointment because since those plugins simply won't be there. Like I already said in another thread; downloading Joomla and then adding directory components like Sobi2 or K2 won't work because the trick is in the detail, and the detail is custom built. In my case, getting it all to work in harmony was nearly 6 months worth of work on purpose built modules from ground up. Any one person forking out the $$ for that amount of work would need really deep pockets so I divided the bill between many.

So, in a way both custom directories and Open Source based directories are in fact custom. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Which one the person will go with will usually depend on how deep their pockets are.
With the first you get exactly the features and design you want, and with the second you may have to disable some of the features you don't want and in terms of design if you don't like the one provided by default, there is usually a great deal of themes you can download for under $50 or so.

Getting back to the original question: "Best CMS to create a escort directory". Unless you are really comfortable with coding and have 3-6 months of time to spare the answer is: NONE
Getting in touch with either atrevido or myself will prove to be a lot smarter choice.

For those "Googling" for a solution: BEWARE... There is at least one script that I know off, that is based on Joomla + sobi2 (original vendor website blacklisted in Google and now sold through a scripts directory of sorts that stole product description from previous version of my own script, word for word , that was based on Joomla but had nothing to do with sobi2 so, yeah don't be surprised if product description doesn't match the package since the product described has been retired for a while ), another one that claims to be based on Joomla but a quick look in demo source reveals its actually Wordpress (go figure )...
Like I said above; it may look suitable but, it isn't. The devil is in the detail and the detail is custom.

There are so many sides to adultwork and it's complex..the advertisers do complain that they take too much commission from them but they get good traffic so most people are happy to stay. This is a multi million $ business so 5K won't develop this. YOu'll get people that say they will be able to create it for that price but in reality, they won't be able to on that budget unless you can find a full team of top professionals working none stop for 6-12 months for 5K. If you don't believe me, just spend some time and go over the features in it..i dont mean the display but how it all functions for all the types of users.
