Suggestion Creating A Dislike Button.

Here is my idea. My feelings on this is that some posts deserve to be sanctioned by a dislike. Many of us have lots of likes and this ought to come with some privilege.
If you have over 250 likes then you should be granted the option of being able to dislike a post. To discourage abuse every time a dislike would be handed out, the member giving the dislike would automatically lose one of their likes. This would cause the member giving out the dislike to pause and reflect prior to handing out the dislike.

Having a bunch of dislikes would more than likely discourage the offending posters and send a clear message to others.
Any thoughts on my suggestion? Do you feel it has any merit or is it not worth consideration?

I wonder if DP would award any trophy points once a member got to 1,000 dislikes.;)
P.S. This particular trophy could come with a bonus 3 month ban.

It's something I would probably use so much i'd have no likes left after a month:rolleyes:
I imagine it wouldn't be very easy to implement, I assume in the database a "like" is directly linked to a particular post and to the user that has liked that post, and if you were to lose a like for giving out a "dislike", how do you determine which "like" gets deleted from the database?
Sorry, I went a bit technical there....

I can't answer that as my idea is in the embryo stage. Being technically challenged (technically inept) I hadn't even considered the roadblocks to implementing such an idea.

I agree, it could be also like a voting system, xxx amount of dislikes and the thread gets deleted like CL :) ( Craigslist )

    Maybe a Post "FLAG " feature ?

Not sure how it would help anything. Youtube has this like/dislike thing, but most of the time I don't understand, at all, why some videos are being disliked.

Let me give you an example. If you go to this video of Pink Floyd's PULSE concert:

you will see that currently there are 43 people there who didn't like that particular video there. I think those who didn't like that video are STUPID and OUT OF THEIR MIND. I think anyone who doesn't like Pink Floyd, their music and talent is a bafoon.

So if I post something on DP and 43 don't like what I have to say, I will deem them STUPID and OUT OF THEIR MIND.

Personally, I do not see any merit to this. Sorry, Spoiltdiva.

Well, thats the point here, the condition Spoiltdiva suggesting is only guy with 250 or more likes can dislike. youtube has no such condition.
But, i think someone with 250 likes must be reputable enough not to spend time for unnecessary dislikes.

I like the idea, but what would the "dislike" button do, other than express... well, a "dislike" to the message? Messages that have no point or are spam can be reported anyway.
The dislike button needs a real purpose.

I do understand your point and absolutely yes, a *dislike* button should indeed serve a real purpose. But I feel it would as the member who received a dislike would think about why they received it. Perhaps they would eventually modify their behavior/comments, and this site would consequently have less crap on it than it presently does.

Email notification + warning? A temporary limitation of posting in the thread he received a dislike in (that sounds a bit like censorship and could be abused though)?
Generally, though, if the ability to dislike were only available with people who have >250 likes, I'm sure the feature would always be used responsibly.

It doesn't take any longer to click a "Dislike" button as it does to click the "Like" button, Dont worry, It'll never happen anyway.
