    • Private blog networks with strong PR, PA, and DA metrics and clean backlink profiles
    • Anchor text diversification using branded Web 2.0 and Social Bookmarks
      • 2-5% exact match anchors
      • 25% brand
      • 25% URL
      • 45% Related and misc
    • Slow link velocity
    • Social signals to legitimize everything

I have not wasted my time "link Building" for years. I just create content that others link to because they want to. They are the links that Google wants and value highly. The entire penguin algorithm and it refinements are aimed at that.

    • Focus external link building efforts on the acquisition of editorially given links. These are links requiring human intervention and approval.
    • Build links that are relevant – on pages where the readers would have a genuine interest in your website.
    • Quality trumps quantity. A few links from high trust/authority websites will have more impact than hundreds of links from "Made for Guest Posting" blogs.

Still focus on quality content as others have said. Then be sure to share that content on social media and social bookmarking sites in hopes that others will see it, think it's good and share it too. Then you can also focus on creating great content to share as a guest post on someone else's blog, that's related to your industry. Some would say this guest posting is no longer working as a linking strategy but if you're getting a link in front of your potential client then I think there's still value.

Since the Google updates over the last year or two I find it's not necessary to build a large amount of backlinks any more. I have a few niche blogs ranking well with less than 20 backlinks in total to each site.

Just a few quality backlinks is enough if you target the right keywords - for me those come from manual blog commenting on high quality blogs, press releases, guest posting and high pr private blog networks.

Get quality links. Forum postings, blog commenting, article submission, web directory submissions. Instead of getting a lot of backlinks, get few backlinks from high ranking pages.

HIGH PR and High Authority websites... This is what you should get your backlinks from... For me, Guest blogging is the best way... Directory Submissions are also a good idea... Don't forget Social Bookmarking sites. Web2.0 should also be helpful :)

Links to avoid (my opinion) -Forum postings, blog commenting, article submission, web directory submissions, Profile links, WIKI links

Only Links I will do, are social media, bookmarking, web 2.0, Press Release, Video links and Image links (like Infographic)

Totally agree with many of you... content is king. It's much more time-efficient to write top-quality content that people will share and comment on than writing dozens of poor-quality articles and then spending hours trying to artificially get the links out. But of course, if we could all write unlimited popular, shareable content we wouldn't have a problem :) Tough one!

Do on page SEO, have interesting content, and build some good links. For the links try articles and blog commenting, only on certain blogs though.

Great tips, but I would recommend doing a minimum amount of blog commenting as google might consider it spam eventually.

Links, links, links. It's still all about the back links. Many people never even realized that during all these "scary" Google updates over the last couple years that encouraged nothing but more quality content, the truth is you didn't even NEED a single piece of content on a web page to rank it #1 in the search engines. A little on page SEO and a handful of the RIGHT KIND of back links and you could outrank nearly everyone on the first page almost over night. Now, in recent months good content has definitely become more important as it will increase the number of keywords Google will rank your page for. But rest assured you won't rank for a single keyword if you have no back links, let alone the right kind, to your site. And for those that are wondering, the "right kind" are HIGH PR, RELEVANT back links.
