    Google Authorship Markup is to put a rel="author" markup code to the content that you have written. You will need to have a Google+ Profile and you have to list your site(s) under the "Contributor To". Once everything is tested and running well... you should be able to see your Google+ Profile Pic in the Search Results when the search results contain your content. Some of the experts are saying that Google is using Google Authorship Markup to distinguish Good Content Writer and Authority in a Particular Niche.

    when we search on google we often find some search result with authors profile pic. It occur for authorship. I did verify my authorship for my blog :p authorship is important to increase your page authority and trust to your post.
