Basic question about domain and SEO

    Hi.

    I have got a potential client(driving school owner) who has a website with a hosting plan specified for driving schools. He is happy with the website, but the url they provide for him is very convoluted. What he wants is a one-page website(with a nice url) with a link to his current webiste.

    Im thinking this is a bit overkill(not very user-friendly) and that a domain that redirects the user to his site would be enought. But how will google react to this?
    His current website has been up for a year or more, and Im worried that the hits the he has been geting will be for nothing?

    Redirecting a main domain to another is not recommended. What you can do a design a web page and put a link that a visitor must click to go to another site but avoid auto redirection.

    301 still work fine, however they lose value over time.

    One pagers are crap for seo, so don't go this way if you're planning on doing any.

    Keep one url for brand name, and other one for ranking/ seo.

    Redirect the brand name to the seo one and it should be fine.

    That's what I would do.

    Redirecting is bad, and onepagers don't rank well. Just stick to ranking the current website and do on site optimization.

    Auto redirecting is considered as bad practices, I would rather prefer you to put a banner at the bottom..... or anywhere on the page that states we have moved to this site..... blah...blah.... This will help the user in knowing what they are up to !!:)

    Hello sir,
    redirecting is bad it is considered to be bad traffic redirection, you will not get relevant traffic from this method. it will redirect irrelevant traffic to your website.

    What @John Dave is a great idea, simply putting a banner stating that you have moved to a new domain would be great. You could also have abutton or so, that takes them to the new domain.

    Thanks alot for all the replays. Great input all around. Gonna suggest doing SEO on his current pag, or if he is willing to go with it, create a new page entirely and put a link to the new website on the old website. Thats what you guys suggested right?
