Finally managed it! I'm always amazed that Wikipedia ranks so highly for almost every single word or phrase you put into Google. Well yesterday, I noticed that my Wolfmother fan site is listed above Wikipedia's page, and only below the official site and their MySpace page. Also amazing what a difference a place makes for traffic - seen it bump up a good 10% the last day or two.
Congratulations. I've beaten wikipedia before, but it was tough. My new term, its one place ahead of me. One method you could use is add YOUR site to the wikipedia external links. This only works if it is incredibly relevant though.
Yeah I've had my link on the Wiki page for months now, so maybe that helps. I agree that Wiki is an evil, sneaky being ... well, it is annoying at least!
I am sure I saw wikipedia placing nofollow on their external links section recently. I know they do not always do it, but occasionally? Can anyone confirm?
generally it requires more effort to beat webpages of wikipedia. but 'quality' inbound links can do anything.
well, if they put no-follow on links, it is probably on all links at once. So it should be easy to check. [I just checked and they certainly don't put rel no follow's on all links, so if they do put them on, I would love to see the details]
Thats a very nice looking site. A well deserved success. If I could suggest a couple of things to strengthen your position. You should add a title tag to the 'Home' link. For even better results, change the word home to Wolfmother. It will work wonders.
every time I add a link to wikipedia they delete it...Yet my competitor has many links pointing there.
Maybe its your competitor deleting it! Submit to really deep categories and they are less vigilent on external links.
The wiki PR and general authority on Google always seems to sneak up on my keywords. They captured two of mine this month :'(
