You have $1000 and want a blog, what next?

I've recently left my job (with a chunky severance bonus) and would like to start a blog until I get back into the workplace. I have about $1000 to spend.

What should I spend it on to give my blog the best chance of success?

*By success I mean a loyal readership, targeted traffic, decent subscription list and eventually a sale value of at least $1000

    Hi! Nice thread :)
There are several tasks to get what you want.
I suggest you to download a professional guide on how to achieve your goal.
You can find very good ones for free, but I'll tell you privately where...

outsource and make your blog looks unique. use fiverr, elance or anything else.
Use that 20% money to make a good content, backling, seo, email capture and 80% for advertising.
that is my plan... don't know what others will say...:)

I will advise to re-write any hot sold online product, come up with a good sales letter and spent on buy ad spots on high authority blogs related to the niche of the product! With the right plan you could make a good ROI

Firstly should ask to someone to design attractive, simple, elegant and responsive(mobile/smart phone compatible) blog so that it attracts the visitors. Quality and informational content is the soul of blog so always take care of it. Do On page SEO so that your blog appears in top search, and its page rank increases.
If you have any kind of doubt regarding this do let me know I will be happy to help you.

Here's my advice. You sound like a total newb, correct?
    1. Get a year's worth of hosting (or more if you want a discount). I use HostGator, some other big names are JustHost, BlueHost, Arvixe - you get the point. Normally costs $5-$8 per month = $60-$100.
    2. Get a domain for your blog (I use NameCheap - at $11/year).
    3. Install WordPress.
    4. Buy a premium theme. I use ElegantThemes, $39/year for 86 themes.
    5. Make it look niche.
    6. Buy a year's subscription to an autoresponder. I use 12secondcommute, but I recommend aWeber/GetResponse if you have the money.
    7. Create content - search engine optimized content (outsource it if you have no idea how to write).
    8. Add your squeeze page, build your list.

Each one of these steps has LOTS of little steps within themselves. But you get the point - right?

Um...what's the point of that? No profit whatsoever.

If you have a few months to spend, you can easily make it generate a passive, long-term income for you. Why settle for anything less?

I totally agree with jrjohn especially when it comes to build a list. It is good to have a budget to accomplish what you want but my advise is to keep it for the time being. Internet marketing is a big forest and you can lose your $1,000 and even more if you don't know where to spend it.
Don't rush things. Do a lot of research and study till you have a good understanding of the nature of this business first then you can determine where to invest your money.

How many blogs do you see sell for $1000. ? Not many at all. you are setting your self up a difficult goal that will not be easy to obtain.

Personally I would invest 4 different blog ideas.
    -1 hosting acct $80
    -4 domains $40
-and you have about $200 to spend on content for each blog.

$200 is a decent amount of content to put into a blog by the time you do that you should be able to see if it is going to get any worth while traffic or earning and if it is put more into it. and if it isn't you only have $200 into it and could probably sell it for 30%- 50% of that.

If you put $1000 into a blog and it has no earnings it is only worth ? $80-$100 ? that's a big gamble.

Whatever you do, do not make a personal blog (unless you have a tremendous story to tell, something like: you were abducted by aliens and then they brought you back after a year or so...). I honestly don't know of a single blog I regularly read that belongs to some stranger who happens to write something about himself/herself.

Anyway, how about a good marketing blog? It's a tough niche to make it to the top, but it's an ever evolving niche, so there's always something to talk about. And you can maybe push it via FB paid ads?
