Well one consideration that i can account for is : AGE

The older your directory or for that matter any site, the trust bank increase in the SEs...

Age, unique content and quality, rather than quantity backlinks.

No links from questionable sites or using questionable techniques.

One of my paid directories is about a year old now with nice backlinks and indexed pages, but with a lot less links than others...yep quantity is not what matters most.

    you probably become trusted if:
    1) you are old
    2) you have quality backlinks
    3) you link only to good sites
    4) you bring google to sites it didn't know about before

A big key to becoming a trusted source is content, and content of quality. This of course comes with time and integrity. When you give the search engines quality content and lots of it they will deeply cache your quality content filled pages and Google will assign page rank to them. There are lots of variables such as the script and outbound advertising linking that also are a determining factors.

I think also government sites ie .gov.uk are also highly trusted - although these are obviously very hard to come by!!!

The status of GOV and EDU websites carries no more weight the other websites except for the fact that they tend to have more traffic then other websites. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Matt Cutts blew that SEO rumor away awhile ago that they carried any more weight than others sites.

I think a high SERP simply indicates your directory to be quality... at least according to Google anyway.

Age! Just wait for my directory to be launched on a 1996 domain name ;)

stoner3221: yeah your right, its just that those domain extensions often have huge amounts of backlinks and authority :)

Regardless of the age if you do not have a lot of quality content you’re still going to have a lot of challenges getting pages cached.
