unless u got a buddy with a hosting company and allows you A LOT of bandwith/space u have no chance to be very profitable with "free" file hosting sites

Well, you will need to find some cheap, BIG bandwidth alternatives.

Go to webhostingtalk.com and request a quote, you'll get good responses.

I recommend, 80GB Space - 1500->2000 GB Band -1024 MB Ram to start off with.

    Peace,

i use a almost a dozen severs in different locations in europe to take advantage of good deals and because our system can scale out easly, more get added every week because we have such a long file retention period

    and its not cheap

any shared, vps hosting is totaly inadequate for this

trust me you have to think big

make sure whatever script you get it can scale so may filehosts dont get past the one server stage get overloaded and die (btw apache sucks big balls for file hosting)

theres a fair bit of competition so costs and risks are large while margins are low :( if i knew the things i know now i would have approached this completely different, but hey hindsight is a great thing

do checkout webhostingtalk for deals as meantioned above, directly approach datacenters for quotes

cogent networks will give the cheapest dedicated bandwidth at 10$ per mbit so if you see offers like that offer you moon and earth like that hosting plan u mention be skeptical,

no datacenter/provider/resseller paying the above will risk loosing money on you, theres a massive amount of overselling goes on in the hosting business

do you really think DREAMHOST will let you use 2TB bandwidth month in and month out? if you dont believe me buy an account clock up that bandwidth and wait for an email from them terminating the contract

hey look what quick search found

    http://www.dreamhost-sucks.com/

anyways it seems dreamhost are connected global crossing, global crosing sell at ~15$ per mbit, their network is excellent

so do the maths any dreamhost customer who clocks up 2TB costs dreamhost
    $120 in bandwidth alone

1- don't believe those who say there are plenty of xxxxxxxx sites already - how big is the internet ?

there is always space for new sites

it's just about how and what methods of traffic you can generate to your site

2- regarding the script, i didn't use it in a live site but i used it locally for some months and even made a simple hack to it to disallow certain extensions from being uploaded

but there is a more powerful script called "xtrafile host"

i'm not selling a product here because it's free and even not mine

you will be amazed of how much features you will find in that script you can limit speeds for different member groups if you intend to offer paid packages

3- last thing i'll be saying is that file hosting sites don't make profits untill they go wild because they cost money in hosting (bandwidth and space) so ads aren't enough and paid hosting won't do much since there are lots of free already

    Good Luck
