    I've disabled all of the tiles and other Windows 8 features. I purchased a new laptop without touch screen capabilities and they removed the start button and force that ridiculous screen on you. I've heard with the update you can remove that part but why not have that in there in the first place? I mean 25 years of keeping the same UI and then changing it completely for computers that don't even have touch screen!

    the speed and smoothness of 8.1 is really good but the tiles and new UI i dont like. i disabled all and made it look like old windows with normal start button.

    I didn't and never will.
    I seem to hear it is somewhat better than Windows 8.
    I was so disappointed with Windows 8 that I went back to Windows 7.

    Yeah, it's far better than Windows 8.
    Many problems solved which were in Windows 8.
    Now I can say with Windows 8.1 , I can enjoy both Desktop and Metro.
    Metro in Windows 8 was not that good to use.

    Completely agree, Windows 8 for a normal laptop (without touch) is absolutely ridiculous (I guess that's your gripe with Windows 8 as well)!!

    Win 8 was actually designed targeting touch devices.

    But comparing to win 7's performance, win 8 is better.
    For the case of user friendliness and ease of user interface, win 7 is better.

    I was forced to use windows 8 after losing my precious iso of windows 7. It has grown on me, I'll admit, but I am still somewhat disappointed with Metro and how utterly stupid it is. I haven't tried 8.1 yet but I'll do an upgrade eventually when I have nothing else to download.
