I have recently moved from one hosting (which was the biggest load of shit in my life, never setup properly to begin with and as such couldnt get ANY of my sites to work on it) to another host which is at LayeredTech. I was chatting to the guy via email, he was nice enough, I told him I knew very little on the hosting side of things and everything seemed alright. So I got the welcome email, tried to login but it didnt work. 6 days later... turns out I had been given the wrong IP address - great start. I finally logged in and retrieved my root password. I setup a few accounts for my sites, uploaded files for one of them, went to my domain registrar and edited the nameservers, but alas, it didnt work. I then emailed them, and guess what, its my responsibility to setup the nameservers. I was completely unaware of this, and although they have some settings in for the nameservers (it seems I'm allocated a subdomain and they've used that, which by the way, doesn't work) How do I setup nameservers? I asked for help and got the link for the cPanel help PDF file thing, the WORST manual I have used in my life. The page numbers dont match up with the page numbers of the PDF (ie. "their pages" go for longer than what they should). Down I scrolled to page 170 something so that I could view page 132. I followed the instructions exactly, and it still doesnt work. I assigned IP's to the 2 nameservers in the basic whm/cpanel setup thing, then tried to add an "A entry" (whatever that is ) but it said: "The zone for the root domain layeredtech.com is missing, or could not be read. The ip address will be read from the webserver configuration and a new zone will be created for this subdomain." This sounds like its THERE fault, not mine. I have no control over layeredtech.com. Once again nothing will just go smoothly with hosting and actually WORK first time. So, my question, WTF am I meant to do? How do I add nameservers which actually work? Can I use one of my domains, because I know they actually work rather than the default one given with my hosting? Your help would be very much appreciated
www.devotedhost.net .. I've been using them for the past 1 1/2 years and they've been great. Only downside is no PHP5 compatibility yet.. but I believe they're adding this in upcoming weeks.
So glad we now DIY! No more emailing & waiting helplessly, etc. What a pleasure to have total control over everything. I do my own DNS too, so maybe I can help you a bit if you're stuck. "The zone for the root domain layeredtech.com is missing, or could not be read. The ip address will be read from the webserver configuration and a new zone will be created for this subdomain." This just means that there wasn't a zone, and hopefully now one's been created. A-record is just an "Address Record". Basically it's just the IP address assigned to your domain name. I don't have any info of your site, so I can't check anything right now...
What kind of information? I've redone what I think should be done... no guarantees about if it actually works or not.
Hi Rochow: I appreciate your frustration in getting things set up. However, I think it is unfair to be blasting LayeredTech for the problems. LT has a great rep in the industry and they have proven themselves many times over. I have been indirectly involved (as a provider) to the hosting industry for the past 5 years and have the distinct advantage of knowing many of the major players first hand. As I said, LT has always stepped up to the plate for their customers. Do you have a dedicated server? Is it managed or unmanaged? If unmanaged, you should try to understand that server setup and configuration is your responsibility. If you are relatively new to hosting, then perhaps you should consider a managed solution for now. Or alternatively, hire a server admin on the side to get things set up properly for you. You can find many capable admins at www.webhostingtalk.com . It sounds like you just need to get your DNS settings configured properly, and your private nameservers set up the right way. Not a big job at all. But if done incorrectly, it will cause you much grief. Good luck. Vito
It is on there GridLayer system. I know about their reputation, that's why I went with them. It just seems wherever I go hosting wise nothing can ever go right. My last server was managed, they were absolutely sh*t, not to mention I cleared my bank account so that they wouldn't get next months payment, and even though I cancelled the subscription, I have to pay $70 because of 2 "dishonourable" cheque fee, because they didn't clear. So I lost $300 + $70 more for a managed dedicated server which NEVER worked DESPITE my complaints and tickets. Considering I only had $500, you can see why I (a fulltime student) am angry about it. I would hire someone to do it, but because of the stupid dishonourable cheque fees I am $70 in the red and just only able to pay that back before the bank hits me with interest (Its a savings account, I didnt know it would even go into the negatives) The rest of the money I have left is going towards christmas presents. From what I had got lead to believe, it was just like shared hosting where a newbie like me could just upload my sites, redirect the nameservers on the domains and it would just work fine and hasslefree.
I understand. I feel bad for you. I would like to help you out if I can. Please PM me with your email address. If I am able, I will hook you up with a server admin who will help you for free to get you set up properly. I know many very capable admins, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The only thing you need to do is provide access to your server, which may be something you are not prepared to do (understandably), but please understand I would only send you someone whose rep in the industry is above reproach. Up to you. Vito
Sorry for your issues with Layered Tech. I have a contact's cell phone number there if you wish it. PM if you want it. I can also recommend a great dedicated server company that gets most servers up and running in 2hrs. My last server was up in an hour. I am also willing to lend you a hand.
Rochow, I always recommend to purchase from resellers instead of directly from server company...anyways if you want to purchase directly i recommend Softlayer Saad
To address the issue of how to register a nameserver, that is done through your domain register. On yahoo you need to email them to set that up, On Enom they have an option for that in the user area. Also some dedicated server hosting companies provide you with their standard nameservers.
