I have had several classifieds sites for more than 10 years and I can tell you from my experience that the simpler the design, the better is. Your homepage structure with blocks of main categories and the subcategories beneath them is the best. I would suggest that you add a block for featured classifieds (with a thumbnail photo). This is usually how classifieds site owners make money, so everyone is looking for this.
