Search engine ranking question

My site ranks No:2 in the search engines for a particular keyword.
The site that is No:1 for that keyword has a lot less back links than i have and their site pages are very poorly optimised.
other than they have had their site running longer than my site, why is it that they are No:1 and i am No:2
If anyones knows the answer please let me know, thanks

Consider the age of the domain, i think that domain was indexed before so wait for Google's update and sooner or later, you may reach the No:1 rank

The difference between #1 and #2 has a lot to do with how well written both descriptions are. Assuming both are written well they get about the same click ratio depending on the key phrase of course.

Now to the question. If you are talking about google Google counts the quality of links not the quantity and also only shows a sampling of your links. So using the link: command may bring up 5 links while the site really has 500. Google does this for privacy reasons for the webmaster and so that the guys linking to the site don't get spammed. Again Google is a quality search engine so it may only take a few good links to take a spot that is held by a site with hundreds.

In MSN and yahoo the story is quite different. It is more the quantity that counts and that is why they are so vastly different in quality from Google.

Theres a lot to consider in regards to this...check the quality of their backlinks and their description, SE will rank sites depending on how relevant your site for that keyword searched...:)

There is so called domain age factor. This is one of the case of this factor. Yes, your suspicion is maybe right. But there are lot of factors in SERP not just the domain age factor and backlinks.

Check whether the No.1 website uses doorway pages or cloaking or not. Domain name is not an important factor in ranking.
