I am unable to access any website/blog that is using cloudflare.

Network-wide issue according to their twitter:

When a Cloudflare server goes down, you can generally expect your website to be rerouted to another locations server. Which in this case did happen as all connections to cloudflares Dallas location are most likely being pushed to their Atlanta server.

No. At the time I posted this information, it was a wide network issue. All cloudflare servers were down, none of websites using cloudflare was accessible. Google it, I'm sure there are a lot of discussion about this early March issue. It was 1 hour downtime or so.

My apologies dalcomp. Regardless, it is still very uncommon to occur.

One thing I have noticed with web sites that use Cloudflare is they are off the air more often than they are on... Not sure I get the point of Cloudflare if redundancy is its purpose, why then do you always see these "CLOUDFLARE" landing pages on Cloudflare web sites when the websites are down?

The number one cause of issues are generally not network issues. The two causes of sites appearing to be offline:

    1. The site's server or hosting provider are having issues.
    2. Something is blocking requests from CloudFlare's IPs. If your host or server has rules limiting our requests, then a site offline error may occur.

"why then do you always see these "CLOUDFLARE" landing pages on Cloudflare web sites when the websites are down?"

The landing pages only come into play when we can't connect to your server.

No, it doesn't. We actually would help offload a lot of the requests through the CDN, which would actually greatly reduce the risk of the site's server going down. In addition, if we have a cached version of the site, we will display a limited version of your site until the server comes back up.

So all CF is is another content delivery system much like Akamai, not a true cloud/backup of the website? I think the name and the description of services is a little misleading. I'm still trying to get to grips with what the point of the entire system really is. I spend more time seeing CF notifications on web sites using CF than I do seeing content. No offense, its an observation and a fair one at that.

"So all CF is is another content delivery system much like Akamai, not a true cloud/backup of the website? I"

We do provide CDN services, yes (not the only thing we do). We also provide security, dns & website optimization features.

We do not provide full site backups (Always Online is only going to serve a limited version of your site if your server goes down). Services like Codeguard do provide those types of services.

"time seeing CF notifications on web sites using CF than I do seeing content."
Not sure what you're referencing relative to error messages here & it is hard to provide guidance. We have a lot of notable sites using us, including large sites like 4chan and Metallica, so we are not prone to having widespread issues. We also have a number of major hosting providers that offer us as an option in their panel.

"I'm still trying to get to grips with what the point of the entire system really is."
Addressed on the overview page in a pretty simple way.

"No offense, its an observation and a fair one at that."
    None taken.

CloudFlare is a welcome defense in the ever emerging world of threats to your site. CloudFlare is very on top of providing security and keeping it up to date, cutting edge at times it seems. They maintain a nice blog for information. Stop in there occasionally for good updates on web security. And as an added bonus, CloudFlare boosts your website's performance.
