Microsoft Security Essentials is good enough, never pay for antivirus, and especially not any of those bloatware anti-virus programs.
Trust me it's not. As a person who has experience with malware creation and detection, i can tell you that MSE is terrible.
You can write an ebook in openoffice and save it as a PDF for distribution. if you need it in a epub or similar format you can use Calibre to convert it
