    Steve,

This will greatly depend upon the administrative overhead you'd like to involve yourself with. For most intents and purposes, CentOS serves nicely as a host OS to cPanel, DirectAdmin, and many other Control Panel software packages, which are designed to simplify the experience of Server Administration to the end-user.

I personally prefer Debian, as it gives me more granular and modular control of what software I prefer to use to tailor it to the purpose of the server. Perhaps it would help if you could let us know what purpose you intend to use your server for, and what services you'll need to have running on it?

    Thanks!
    Zach

Theres a reason why CentOS is the most popular linux distro for web servers :). Having said that Debian isn't far behind! Can't go wrong with either really.

    What reason is that? :)

I personally prefer Debian and always use it on dedicated servers. (I've even had DirectAdmin installed, too.) Debian is not the hand-holding type, though, so it's not ideal for everyone.

If I compare it to openSUSE, for example, with its YaST2 (it has a GUI and ncurses interface) which takes a lot of effort out of setting things up.

CentOS and Debian are both the best options you have when choosing a GNU/Linux distribution to install in your web server.
They both have the most possible updated version of packages and are a very solid and stable GNU/Linux distribution.

You can't go wrong with either CentOS or Debian.

CentOS if you're going to use cPanel. Since you said you're going to use DirectAdmin then either of the two I mentioned would be fine.

Go with CentOS, although it has its quarks, but it is stable enough and is used widely.

I've used both Debian and CentOS. If you like to get things up and running and "forget" about them CentOS is probably your best choice.

Hope this helps you decide ;)
