    Hi Sara,

Link pyramids can be effective if done correctly. Here are my answers to your four questions:

    1. Link wheels and link pyramids are similar. Some people say that link pyramids have less of a footprint, and I'm inclined to agree. I tend to use link pyramids.

    2. Web 2.0 sites are websites that allow user-generated content. Here are a few examples of Web 2.0 sites:
    wordpress.com
    weebly.com
    blogger.com
    squidoo.com
    tumblr.com
    xanga.com

    There are many more!

    3. How quickly you can build links safely will depend on several factors. If you're ranking a site for a small business, which is what it sounds like, and it's a month old then you can start building around 5 links per day safely. You CAN build much more than this, but that's what I tend to do, and it gets good results as long as you stay consistent. If you build 20 links per week, for instance, keep building the same amount of links and increase or decrease that rate over time. If your site gets 500 links one day and no more after that, it will eventually drop in the rankings (if it ever ranked highly in the first place).

    4. You can build a link pyramid manually by posting content to a Web 2.0 site and then posting links to that site from social bookmarking sites or a wide range of other sites. There are also several tools that can create link pyramids for you. Be careful with tools - don't overdo it. Whether you build your link pyramid manually, or with tools, it's gray hat at best.

    Hope that helps!
    Ryan

This is good if you take help of web 2.0 sites for link building purposes as web 2.0 sites have good ranking in Google SERP but you have to use only fresh articles for better result!

Also, consider building links based on these parameters:

    natural links
    relevant links
    slow links
links from quality and authority sites!

Link wheels are one of many strategies used in internet marketing and search engine optimization as a way to drive visitors to websites. The fundamental idea for this strategy is to create a circular pattern of links that easily flows through a number of websites.

Build some high quality Web 2.0s with unique content, and the results will be tremendous in my experience. Google really values these types of links these days, just don't make a closed link-wheel as it's very unnatural. Some random interlinking might help, but I personally don't do it.

None of them. A wheel is obvious and will be ignored (if you're lucky and you're not hit by Penguin) by Google pretty much immediately.

One of the problems you have with a pyramid is it can easily be broken. Think about this - Mr Black Hatter uses the (fictional) site monkey.brains as part of his pyramid. Monkey.brains ceases to exist and the pyramid is broken. Or, a real world example is Squidoo - their links stopped carrying weight and are now nofollow. What is the point of putting in all this effort for it to be for nothing? If you're lucky, it's nothing and you can recover with genuine links. At worst, your site is hit by Google Penguin and you spend a long time trying to recover (as it doesn't come around often) and loosing revenue.

Instead, your time would be much better served making a site your audience wants and working on earning links (use social media to contact people relevant to your site's topic and bait them into linking to you).

I would advise against using a link wheel nowadays, it is easily detected by google and will typically lead to your site being hit - much better off using a link pyramid in my honest opinion!

These link building practices are spam according to Google. They don't work anymore as they are by no means a vote to your site from a relevant or an authoritative source. Have a great content marketing strategy. Update the blogs on the site with quality and informative content which will be of great help to your users, it helps your site get traction when done consistently with high quality backlinks, traffic and conversions.
