They are pretty good I will give you that, but doing them and nothing else is not a very solid workout on any level.

Well it depends on what your goals are. Allyson Felix used them as her main exercise for a year. With 3 consecutive days per week of deadlifts as her weight training system she increased her max lift from 125 pounds to 300 pounds over that year while her bodyweight increased 2 pounds from 121 to 123 pounds.

At the end of that year in 2004 she ran the fastest 200 meters in the world for all women.

'main' exercise is a bit different than 'only' exercise.

lol Grim... can't we just agree that the deadlift is a cool exercise that can be a part of a great a workout program?

I never said only do deadlifts. My main point is that its just a great all round exercise and just because MIA saw some fat guy doing deadlifts all the time while eating M&M's and drinking coke... doesn't mean its a bad exercise.

I agree with you there, it is a good move otherwise I wouldn't do it ;)

I have watched a similiar guy at my gym though, deadlift after deadlift :D

Deadlifts are a very good exercise. The main drive comes from the quads/ham/glutes and the back is in isometric, is that the right term?, contraction during the lift.

Although the back should also be stretched out after doing deadlifts or at the end of the work out.

True, but the guy that is doing it is not really doing anything for himself, from what I can see. Like I said, he is a nice guy. We talk about football every weekend, who will win, how bad the Pack sucks this year, etc.. But I have never bothered to ask him what he is trying to accomplish. The weight slaming is a bit annoying and pretty intentional. I know when I have my iPod on full blast I can sometimes be a bit loud putting weights back, but he can hear what he is doing. He is dropping the weights pretty hard, not just from the dead lifts, but when he removes them, or puts them on the rack, he slams them pretty loud. It gets attention, and I sometimes wonder if that is not what he is looking for...

Well on another topic, after shoveling some 18+ inces of snow Friday, I finally made it into the gym for the legs on Sunday. Man am I sore today... Between the shoveling and squats I am streched pretty far.

Now you just need a touch of the flu 'I have it and it sucks trying to lift with it' :p

Shoveling however is a workout in itself! :D

God I hope not! I usually end up with something like that once a year, usually in the spring of all times... This year it lasted all of 24 hours. The year before it was 3 days of hell. I did not get off my basement futon for 3 solid days! For anything... Did not eat, drink, pee, etc... Just slept. God it was horrible. I could not move!

You're telling me. My neighbor's wife works at the Y, and while we were getting pummeled by the snow storm, her husband came over to help me (he has a snow blower)... Even with the snow blower it was slow going. The thing kept clogging up. I told him I had thought about going to the Y that morning and he told me that his wife said only two people made it in and they were gonna close. I figured the shoveling was going to make up for it, and boy did it... A lot of lower back pain though... This was some heavy snow!
