Well I own a tech blog where I post on interesting tech gadgets like different kinds of USB devices or funny coffee mugs. I can't possible take a picture of these. I guess now you understand why I had this question. What would you suggest me to do in this case?

So find images you can use legitimately for free as otherwise yes link leaks can affect things in many ways...

Certainly would be terrible advice from an SEO perspective to have link leaks with all the images you choose to use IMHO. But then what do I know it's not like I know anything about SEO now is it :)

As an expert, would you tell me in what ways will I be affected with what you term "link leaks" as I'm just trying to do it the right way by giving credit to the real owner of the image. But yes, if I have 100 articles x 5 images/article, so that's 500 images and 500 links pointing outta my blog! Yes, that's a big number and can certainly be termed link "leaks". How does it affect my blog in terms of SEO if you can tel me out of your experience?

Now don't ask ask me to create posts without images or have my own images. Mine is a tech blog with interesting/different/unusual topics which was started out with an idea of presenting readers with attractive images (which can't be taken with my own cam).

You do have to ask the owner first in this case. Simply because some of them might not want you to share their images at all. However in most cases what you just mentioned will work fine. Hope this helps :)

What if you use images from Google Image search.......save on desktop then upload to your website, this way the image name would be different than what was indexed in Google image search?

Would this work as fresh/new image? As search engines are not able to read the images, only thing is altering text within the image, alt text, image path etc...or is there anything more?

Problem is you never mentioned form the beginning you we're talking about product images as you just need to check sources.

Some will let you use them as it helps them sell their products orthers will cea and desist you.

I did some work for/with a lingerie store and their suppliers would not let them use their images as they saw their use as competition and required the lingerie store to provide their own imagery as their original images had cost them a lot of money in photography fees and model fees etc and so we're for their exclusive use. And they did/would persue leagl action.

I had to redo all the images they wanted to use for their website using other ones.

However you never mentioned this aspect until a couple of posts back. As for Google images if you read there is a big statement saying images may be subject to copyright. Many images cost money to use unless stated otherwise hence why there is a lot of stock photo sites, not that any of this has turned out to be relevant to the question about using product images it turns out which was ot clear from the start...

You could only use the same picture if there is NO copyright in the image! But it's normal to have the same picture in more than 1 place! Just like your profile image in Facebook and Twitter for example and other websites! :)

If I get images from Google, if the owners of the image have exclusive rights, then they must have a watermark or something on the image to let everyone know they are copyright protected. If the website owner has not done that, then can I use those images from Google in my articles posted on my site?

Google or any other search engine doesn't read images so it won't affect rankings however there can be copyright issues so please beware of that.

We are going round in circles here, just do what you want or what feels right to you and await what happens.

I don't think you're right here. Google does scan images and my site got hit badly and lost 80% of its traffic after Jan 2013 image update from Google.

Well, if I were to try everything I feel is right, I may be penalized for some of the stuff I do. Only to prevent that and save my valuable time, I posted a thread here, so I could learn from experts who are 'willing to help' by sharing their experience.

Following is the excerpt from support.google.com/webmasters/answer/72746?hl=en
"Googlebot's ability to successfully crawl and index your content; it will also make your content more accessible. Many people, for example users with visual impairments, who use screen readers, or have low bandwidth connections, cannot see images on web pages, and providing text equivalents widens your audience."
As far as I know it does not read.

Can you tell how you used images? From saving the images on desktop or just copying the url of image?

But my site was receiving most of its traffic through google images and was down by 80% from Feb 2013. I saw a drop on a monthly basis and it's still going down! Lets wait for someone to let us know about this.

I saved images to my desktop, renamed images with keyword. Say if I wrote a post on "iPhone battery", I took 5 images from various sites, named them iPhone battery1, iPhone battery2, iPhone battery3,etc. And it did bring up my images in the first page of image search in google for similar keywords by which I was getting majority of my traffic. I never gave any link to the real website i took it from. But someone else had taken my image and used up in their blog and given me a link back to my site. Someone also shared my already copied images and gave my site links from Pinterest so the traffic was growing everyday.

Plagiarism is what Google hates the most. Copying a content from other site, get permission especially when you want to use their images and give them a credit with a link. This is all you got to do before using other's content.

Unofficially Google does have the ability to scan basic imagery. I mean if you search in the image results they do not show any pornographic images? Is this because they trust webmasters to just use the right alt tags? No, it's because they can tell via the amount of skin tone color in an image. However at this time there is no report that they use it to determine plagiarism, but that wouldn't be the first time Google did something behind the scenes.

This is not necessarily true. Images on Google are usually copyrighted unless otherwise specified. You can find some by using the search terms "royalty free" when searching for images to use.
