Hitler's racing car to set record?

A racing car commissioned by Adolf Hitler is expected to become the most expensive car ever sold at auction.

A racing car created by Porsche at the request of Hitler is expected to set a world record at auction /Europics

The 1939 Auto Union D-Type, thought to be one of only two in existence, was created by Ferdinand Porsche after a personal request from Hitler.

The German dictator wanted the car as a propaganda tool to show off the technological superiority of the Third Reich.

The car, one of the fastest of its time, has 485 horse-power and a maximum speed of 186mph and is going to be auctioned by Christie's in February in Paris.

Almost all the D-Types were destroyed during the Second World War but this one was taken to Russia for its technology to be studied.

It was taken apart and the dissembled parts were discovered in the 1990s. The car has since been reassembled and is expected to reach a record price.

The current world record for a car at auction is held by a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale Sports Coupe - sold for £5.5 million by Christie's in the late 1980s.

Wait, didn't some parts from Hitler’s car go into the original were car? Oh no! We must stop it!

But seriously, this is a historical artifact, not only due to who owned it, but also due to it's significance from an engineering stand point. Just because it belonged to someone despised world wide, does not mean it should be destroyed. Some of those bidding highest on it might be people who despise Hitler the most and wish to 'stick it to him' by sitting their rears on what was once Hitler's personal property. Others may be inheritors of his philosophies (neo Nazis) and wish to own it to have a piece of him. Others may be world war 2 buffs, car buffs, or maybe there's a rich person out there that watches futurama and wants to own a piece of the future were-car. The more types of people (or groups of people, who can pool their money) that could want an artifact, the higher it's auction price is likely to be.

However, some in the auction may indeed wish to buy it simply so that they can personally destroy it. Again, potentially to 'stick it to Hitler'.

For the price that that car is going to sell for, I don't think whoever bought it would want to destroy it.

I used to drive a hitlermobile.

I loved driving it down the freeway at 80mph. It was like real life Mario Kart. I'd tell me friends not to feel sad if I crashed in it. I'd be dead so I wouldn't care. And that flaming ball of fire shooting down the road at 80mph should be enjoyed.

Hitler is dead. It'd make more sense for the proceeds to go to Holocaust museums or something.

Did I, at any point, say that emotion driven motivations and actions of people make logical sense?

That was my main thought as well. Either immediately to a museum, or to a private collection first, and then willed to a museum later, or donated as a tax shelter when needed.
