Can we post links to sites here?

I'm new here and I don't really know what is considered acceptable and non-acceptable behavior. Some of you may think that this is common sense, but then the problem with common sense is that it leads to "assumptions" and I think it's pretty common sense what they say about assumptions... :) Anyways, my question is fairly simple: can we post links to clean, spam-free, informative, high quality, unique-content sites? Or must we first pass the 3 trials, behead the 3 headed dragon, and then circumnavigate across the globe to meet with high council of orders to grant us permission? Okay, maybe that was an exaggeration... but you get my point. I'm just trying to ask: what do I have to do to stay on this forum's okay list?

If your first posts are you posting links to "informative" sites that are your own, yeah... probably would be seen as spam/self promotion.

Great. Thanks for the heads up. My only question is: why is everyone after self promotion before member initiation? Do the webmasters not realize that this hurts the forum's image by driving away potential users just because they didn't get their way first? By the way, it's funny how spam/self promotion are usually clumped in the same category because they're not necessarily the same thing!

Ok, before I get bashed too hard (because I realize this is a very sensitive topic), I know that forums mainly do this to keep spammers off their site. However, the entire reason that I have stayed away from forums for years now is because this one reason alone: webmasters sometimes mistake spammers for non-spammers in the process. So, I have learned to accept it but I still have a right to voice my opinion, right? Well anyways, go ahead and bash away at me. :)

I guess that's a good enough reason. So what you're saying is: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? Yup, I've revealed my true dork identity. :)

A forum is a place where people write informative content, not post links to the informative content they've wrote elsewhere.

Alex210, I don't like that definition. What if those links are relevant to content in the same post? What if they support claims in the same post? Surely there are some situations in which it's okay to post to a link, otherwise anyone who did it would be banned.
