Checking if the site's indexed

When I buy an expiring domain name and check if it's indexed by Google, I find that when typing "site: mysite.com" the web doesn't show up in Google as opposed to "mysite.com" without the word "site:" Does this still mean that the site is indexed also? Can you omit the word "site:" or is it a necessary part. Thanks!

It's necessary... Without it you just looking for occurences of "mysite.com" text.

This is the way to find all the content of your site in Google!

But we can't say that the site is penalized or not, a penalized site can also be indexed in Google.

Thanks a lot guys! What if I mistakenly bought a site that's not indexed in Google, can I try to index it afterwards?
