You have many plans, but you have to decide first what is your niche.
Once you know what you wish to sell, it will be much easier to move forward.
What is your starting budget ?
After that, get yourself a domain name, sign up for an account with a web host so that your website has a home.
Once you have settled your domain name and web host, the next step is to design the web site itself, you can either buy a template.
It goes on and on , but you will have start somewhere.
    Good Luck !!

    Sure you can.
If you use WP and one of their free templates, its more then enough for the start.

there is a couple of options to get a site going.

1.You start one up for free or buy your own domain name with hosting.
research a niche you want to pursue (things you think people want or you enjoy, etc.)
    or
    2. find a site that's already developed and you could find them in places on the marketplace where sites are for sale or flippa. you'll need to do some work eg buying traffic, build links to your site if that's what's it's needed.

lots more to it but you can always outsource to pay someone else to do the work for you eg, elance, fiver or even search the forum here.

as for $500 you can definitely spend less to get a site going. just find out cost of a domain & hosting etc. a good domain name would cost you anywhere from $8-$15 p/yr hosting the same but billed monthly.

Then you can go for free wp templates like martin said.
outsource anywhere from $1 p/hr to who you choose to go with e.g. $5 plus.

so really it comes down to you doing some research.
    hope this helps :)

if you don't know anything about it, best thing to do would be to spend some time of forums like dp and learn about what you would like to do. otherwise you can turn your investment into nothing in no time.

Guys, not anyone who has cash can start a website, don't take it as an easy thing, having a budget is only a +.
for what i've seen i would easly predict that it won't work for you, because you are not educating yourself about these kind of stuff, i mean look :

You have no idea what about you want to sell, you don't seem so serious about it, it's not a 100% winning business, you will have lots of competitors.
and ou won't be making thousand of dollars man at least not from the 1st year.

I advice you to concentrate on the planning 1st, before you make any silly move and lose that $500 for nothing.

Well stated... people who start with the primary goal of making more money are bound to fail. You want to make a lot of money? Start by figuring out how to HELP a lot of people.

From where you are going to get the items to sell ? do you know any providers ? how much % you are going to take ? is it a competitive price ? what's your plan for the shipment ( or how are you going to send it anyway )? will you charge for it ?
Payment methods ? not every visitor has a paypal ?

If you answer these question ( maybe there is few more questions ), then you may start thinking about IM.

    dude....dont....

ok sure, you can start a site, with wordpress + domain + hosting for almost nothing, but getting visitors, and actual paying users? I doubt that $500 budget will be successful in bringing in enough sales until the revenue of the site can pay for ongoing costs of advertising.

every week there is about a dozen of these sites for sale on flippa. the money isnt in running these types of sites, its in selling them. You might be able to buy one that is nicely setup (again, they come with suppliers etc) and usually these sites sell for $100-$200....

but dude, noone (that I know of) that has brought these types of sites has ever made money.

Yah like most people say, know exactly what you want to do first by getting yourself prepared. (Do lotssssss of research) and most important, make sure that when you do finally carry out your plan, dont give up if the first few months you dont make money. Good things come to those who wait (and have knowledge)

You have to establish first what kind of product you wanted to have, or what niche you want to acquire, make sure its related to your passion or something that you really wanted to do.

    1. decide what to sell, 2. create your own product(s), 3. market your product, 4. find affilates and use the right affiliate networks (affiliates will deliver sales on your behalf), 5. build your list, 6. make money. Of course is not easy at it seems, but this is the general system that works. With $500 it's very tough unless you do all the things yourself, if you decide to take action on this, just let us know here, we'll give further insights. All the best

I actually ran one of those sites about 10 years ago... I only ran it for about 6 months - and yes, I made money with it.

Not much... but enough to buy gas for the car...

I sold it because I was unhappy with the quality of traffic - I knew that far too many people were buying traffic thinking that it was the same sort of traffic that proper SEO would give them. It isn't.

People who can develop real traffic have better things to do with it than sell it to others... if they're smart.

I show people how to do #5 & #6. And yes, you DO have to do the work... $500 is actually larger than the budget I show people. With that much money - you'd do very well indeed in list building... provided that you know or learn how to put up a website... and have enough smarts to copy what works.

First of all launch your website with a proper plan and if you expect genuine traffic than you should go for proper internet marketing. If you are looking for great eCommerce than you should go for CMS like ZenCart, Magento, Oscommerce, Joomla etc rather than Wordpress. Website development is going to be one time investment with little maintenance cost. Main is the promotion of website and only good Internet marketing efforts.

Agree, with $500 you can do a lot in list building process and start getting some leads and potential buyers. Taking action is the key here and never give up. you can't succeed if you don't experiment failures, that's the truth. All the best.

500 is good for start, but promoting your site and marketing the products will require a lot of work from your part! Use an open source e-commerce platform, use a nice clean theme, and start promoting and doing SEO work. If you reely want it, you will succeed! Best of luck!
