I got this email saying that mydomain.com was raising their rates do
to an increase in registration fees; Did they just not raise their years not long again?

This is the email I got:

    Dear MyDomain Customer,

Due to recent registry price increases and in order to continue
to provide you the excellent service you expect, we will be
raising the renewal price of the following domain extensions
    by $0.50/year starting July 1, 2013:
    • .COM
    • .NET
    • .ORG
    • .BIZ
    • .US
    • .INFO

Act now to beat the price increase. Renew your domains for
multiple years to lock in long-term savings. Don’t wait to
    pay more.

    Renew your domains now:

Note that if you’re logged in to your account, you can check the
current renewal pricing for your domains at the following link:

We appreciate your continued loyalty to MyDomain.

    Best Regards,
    MyDomain Customer Service

I guess if you just have 1-2 domains, then it is no big deal, but
if you have many domains in your portfolio, then even a small
rate hike can turn out to be somewhat exorbitant; and I do not
think it even has been a year since their last rate hike, not cool....

Pretty sure this doesn't belong in the legal issues forum...

Indeed, what's the legal issue here?

    On the side:

If MyDomain is also raising their .com prices by then, I guess they're using that as a so-called excuse. Oh well, you can always move elsewhere if needed.

If you are worried about this rate, then transfer your domains to Namesilo or any other registrar that have better price.
