what is the process for setting up a hosting company (I don't want to be a reseller) what is the process for connecting the server to the internet?
What do I need to get started? Legal Status: First up you will need to ensure your business is legitimate and running in accordance with the law of your country. Check out any licenses, permits or certifications you may need to start-up. Capital Outlay: A data center will be expensive to fit out so you will need a significant amount of capital at the outset. You may be able to save money if you can buy into an existing setup, however you should check out the condition of the tech inside and the cost of upgrading. Premises: Of course fundamental to your business will be suitable premises. You will need a site which is clean, offers climate control, is secure and spacious enough to accommodate all the equipment whilst leaving enough space to be able to carry out maintenance and repairs. You should also check out any necessary permits required to operate your business, along with access, power and a fast internet connection. This is not a business you can run from your garage! Staffing: Running the center will almost certainly require a number of staff to ensure all systems are kept up to date and to minimize downtime. You may need to hire in administrative staff to handle the day-to-day stuff and you can look at external companies to handle support questions and billing... What about the server location? Is there specific location or any formula to put your server in reasonable location as most of the companies looking for.
This is possibly something that you should know before setting up a hosting company. Anyhow I will outline the steps needed below: 1. If you want it to be a company, you need to register your business with the companies office. 2. Purchase a domain for your hosting company. It should be a .com or country specific domain name depending on the niche you are targeting. 3. Purchase a dedicated server off a reputable provider. It should have at least 8Gb ram and good disk space. Hosting providers like to show off their server specs. You could co-locate if you have a lot of start up capital. If you decide to co-locate rather than lease servers you are going to need to find co-lo providers. 4. Purchase monthly server management. Do not get it from the same provider as you got your dedicated server from. This can cost around $25 / month. Take a look at the WebHostingTalk forum to find companies that do this. 5. Purchase a WHCMS license (or rent it) or HostBill or BoxBilling Pro. This functions are your backend client area for your website. 6. Create your front-end website: Either: - Through a WHCMS theme. - Wordpress -HTML/CSS You should use a custom or premium theme. 7. Get a domain reseller account. There are a number of providers around including resell.biz and others. Do a search. 8. Link your front end and backend. Make your client area connect to your server and place packages on there. 9. Have an affiliate system. 10. Hire a staff member or get a partner. 11. Sell. Sell. Sell. List your deals on DP, webhostingtalk, http://lowendhost.org etc.
Or you could do what many others do.... Order a reseller plan from an unlimited hosting company, purchase a cheap template or just copy a site you like, make minimum custom changes to said template, offer unrealistic hosting plans with offers of unlimited everything, claim to offer guaranteed 99.95% uptime although you've not been in business more than a few days, make up some client testimonials for customers that don't exist, talk about yor commitment to providing the best service ever at the cheapest price, have a great 24/7 support and plan not to sleep ever again (or until you shut the business down), only offer yearly payment options, don't have a telephone number or address on your web site, go out of business within a few weeks because you realize it is harder work than you thought it would be, people aren't beating down your door to do business with you but a few people have paid, and the reseller plan actually costs money. Do the same every time your college or school has a vacation period of more than one week. Boast to friends about having an internet business that pays your thousands each month. P.S. I'm only joking, but I've just described over 80% (made up figure) of the new internet businesses that appear every summer.
@RonBrown, You forgot the Affiliate Program thing. You must claim that you pay $100,000 every month to your affiliates, even your Alexa rank is still 2,000,000 @drcensor, The article posted by @dotcompals is a good one and, as you can see, creating and managing a hosting company is a damn hard work. If you don't have any experience on that field, I doubt that you can do it following some advices from the web. Becoming a reseller is easier and the costs are low, so you don't need to get a lot of customers in a short time in order to cover the costs. Actually the Reseller solution is a good starting point and you can get your own servers at a later point, when the business will grow up and you'll have more technical and market knowledge. Good luck!
get a dedicated server from any reliable hosting company you will need a cpanel/whm license once done you will be able to create and sell accounts
I agree, there are a lot of providers like this. My recommendation is do not follow this route. Instead, look into setting up your own server and hiring people with experience to manage it. You will also need a support team who are dedicated (not lazy) and have experience in the field.
