Cross-linking between sites from the same IP

I have many websites hosted on the same IP. And I have links from each one to another, as they have related topics.
Reading SEO articles, some saying that Google will not consider such links and better to get back links from different class-C IPs.
Just wondering is that is really the case, or simply speculations to promote SEO hosting that offers different class C IPs for hosted domains.

I remember an experiment based on these assumptions, of course no-one can tell you the specific value of different links because the algorithm Google uses is ridiculously big. The results of the experiment were; that there seemed to be more value to a back-link from a different ip-address than there was for one of the same ip. So your links aren't useless, but investing in different ip's for your websites would result in more incoming value.

*As an addition i'd like to say that the value of your links are also defined by the content of the website from which the link derives. And also how many other outbound links there are on that specific website. The ip-address is just a small portion of the overall value.

In my experience cross linking between sites on the same IP has no adverse effects.

I will give you an example > Google > find the best s30 to hire

changing s30 to SEO and use Google.co.uk

Now if you search that (prior to this post affecting it in any way as can happen) 8 of the page 1 links are my sites all cross linked on the same IP

So the evidence would suggest that it's all bollocks and likely a ploy to make you buy more hosting accounts me thinks....

If both sites are related, go ahead. Unique IP's could possibly hold greater value (as if you're linking back and forth, similar to a reciprocal links these days, the benefits are minimal) - but certainly no adverse affects from doing so on the same IP.

    Link relevance is key

I've done that too before I had better hosting. I don't think I got any penalties or anything like that, but it didn't seem to help much.

I for sure wouldn't do it anymore though because Google could see it as a private blog network and de-index all of them. Probably hard to do that, but you never know.

It's a good idea to always be striving for different C Class IP Address links, but I wouldn't focus on it in totality.

Could you please show evidence why it is "a good idea"?

You see if this was the case then all reseller hosts might as well stop selling hosting as sites on the same IP (linked or not linked) are "by suggestion" not going to get anywhere. But where is the evidence for or against this?

I checked 2 sub domains of one of the most know classifieds websites kijiji.
    montreal.kijiji.ca and toronto.kijiji.ca
They both on the same class C IPs, but different IPs. And they so doing well.

In link building IP address is counted, but if you link sites which are hosted on the same IP address then you are going to get some benefit as well, but try to make it natural.

I do it all the time with sites in the same niche and haven't had any issues.

I don't really get the point you're making here. What does unlinked sites have to do with what is being discussed in this thread?

OK maybe mentioning unlinked was not such a good idea then as might mislead, hence your comment I guess but what I was referring to is reseller hosts would not be able to operate if people linked on the same IP somehow got penalised for such. It's just not good business.

There is only one real way to find out which is to try it and see. But you are going to want to make your links relevant in some way or have some way that these links work with each other so they compliment each other for it to be of use.

    But effect?

    What effect do you mean?

It's also one of those things that so many factors are involved a one yes or no type answer is not something a person cna give. You have to try and see what works for you.

Your better off spending your time focusing on original content now than link building. That is a thing of the past.

In my experience dealing with SEO "professionals" - the only ones who pay attention to IP addresses are the ones doing something they don't want Google to notice. :)

That said, there are IP blocks that Google will purposely devalue (hosts known for being friendly to blackhat SEO's, for example), but other than that, if you're with a reputable host the IP address block will have zero impact. Google simply CAN'T police based on IP address ... with CDN's and load balancers stacking thousands of sites on the same public IP's, it wouldn't make any sense for IP address to be a variable. The larger the host, the less you have to worry about it.

I think the algo would look for linking that was manipulative. Getting a few link sfrom the same IP wouldn't be considered trying to game google. And the chances of many sites on the same host linking to you without asking for it would be close to zero.

Yeah I think unusual spikes in popularity (in regard to links) are much more likely to raise red flags than some cross linking on the same IP's will, at least that is my perception going by my experience.

More likely to be seen as false to when such things are manipulated spikes.

Not sure I quite get the "chances of many sites linking to you without asking" thing though?

Sites on the same host (not owned by you) that would link to your site.
