By the name you have chosen I take it you aim to target legal companies worldwide.
I would say your best bet then it to spend your $1,000 on building up a LinkedIn profile account and sending legal professionals through LinkedIn ads.

That is a nice directory! .. anyway, $1000 can be too much but also too less. You should post some ads in the top newspapers for a few days and see how it goes.

 

talk easy but hard to do. few hundred buck. like 999$. how long & how many website you need to paying?
like dmeg(dot)com . sidewide link already 80$ month. then how many link you need to make PR 6 on homepage & PR 5 on sub.

 

I still stand by my opinion which is based on over 12 years experience, when there was only dmoz online and FFA, classified sites, and link exchange where the only place to get links!

Im talking about days most of you didn't hear about, days when you would open a site and 72 hours later your top ranking in Google and MSN, no penalties, no sandbox, low competition!

So once again, $1000 will get you no where if you want to compete with the big directories but it will definitely get you a high pagerank directory, that will generate you income!

 

I would discard the project or keep it on hold as I already have unless I am done with 20,000 in the entire 12 months on the directory.

 

If you are promoting a general directory, then advertising on directory listing sites like Vilesilencer and DirectoryCritic plus advertising on webmaster forums. Spend money on a good banner ad designer as well to maximize CTR. If you are promoting a niche directory, then advertise on sites that cater to that niche. Wherever those people gather, buy ads on those sites. Also run a listing special and do a press release about it. Also consider advertising in related magazines, like Website Magazine or a magazine that caters directly to your niche. Last minute specials for magazine ads can be had if you know where to look.

I would only bother with spending the $1000 after building a lot of unique content on the directory. I've got directories that continue to pay off just in Google Adsense because I get traffic to the unique content. I also have some that are just a bunch of submitted sites, and the traffic is not very good.

 

You're absolutely right. I won't be spending serious marketing dollars until I have a few listings in most categories and a good number of content on the website. I started this thread to get an idea what the suggestions out there are. I'll probably end up spending the marketing dollars in about three months or so
