    Hi:
I want to start a new directory and I would like to know how to start with categories. Did you make it manually? Is there any kind of file to start with?

What is your advice to start? Is OK to start copying other directories categories and then add and delete to do your own?

    Hope your answers :)
I'm learning a lot here and I want to have a good start.

The big daddy is obviously DMOZ. If you want a niche directory find the specific section in DMOZ and then obviously filter out the sub categories that you feel are a little too specific for your needs. If your going down the general directory route then look at the main DMOZ sections or look at combining category ideas from some of the other popular top directories such as Alive and Aviva. At the end of the day its up to you how detailed and specific you want your directory to be.

Make it too simple and your categories will be overloaded with links, have too many categories and your directory will seem initially empty and also potentially difficult for submitters to find the correct and relevant sub category for their listing.

    Best of luck!

So I suppose I have to make balanced: not too simple but not too many categories too.
I want to do a general directory by the way.

I think the best quantity of categories should be 500 - 700. :)

I added them all manually so i wouldnt have the same categories as the thousands of other directories out there using dumps.

Thats a good question. What do you think guys for a travel directory? Should I narrow it down to the destinations or keep it general at the beggining?

I am thinking for example to do it like UK>England>London?

Is this good or shall i stop at Enngland and once I get more links to add the categories?

    Thanks!!

Well, now I'm on my way.
First I tried a SQL dump with 700 categories on it, but the work of deleting categories and adding others was harder than start from scratch.
So I have deleted the dump and have started from scratch.
I'm using Dmoz and 2 other directories combining category ideas as you said and its nice. I know I will have to work hard at start, but I believe it would be better to have a clean directory and exactly as I want.

And yes, I will have 500-700 categories

    Thanks mates
    :)
